Our two teeny tiny caterpillars are now quite big! They are eating like crazy, and I am making daily trips to the garden for milkweed. Hopefully they begin their chrysalis process soon.
Today we had fun doing monarch centers. Students did two monarch crafts, explored butterfly books, and watched some videos about the monarch butterfly. This week, we will be taking a close look and observing the caterpillars as well as taking notes on what we see.
This week in reading workshop, we will wrap up our study of characters in series. Today we completed a character web about our character in our reading journals. As second grade readers, it is important to take note not just about what the character does but why we think the character did what they did.
For word study, we will continue to look at ways to read and spell long i and explore verbs. A long-i word sort will go home again this week for practice, and it is due on Friday. In writing, we are working on second and third small moment stories as well as revising.
In math we continue to place value, counting, and comparing numbers to 1,000. We will learn how to write numbers in different forms.
Please remember that we have P.E. on Wednesday, so proper shoes and a hat are recommended. It is going to be hot this week, so please send a water bottle with your child as well.

Building Thinking Classrooms Family Night
At Back-to-School Night, I briefly mentioned the work our class will be doing this year with vertical surfaces problem solving. This pedagogy is formally known as "Building Thinking Classrooms," and you are invited to attend a family information night to learn more about this amazing instructional practice! Please RSVP if you plan to attend.
Buy in person to avoid fees afterschool September 22-25, 2:30 PM - 3:15 PM at Picnic Tables by the Dismissal Gates. We accept check or cash.
The reading log is to keep track of nightly reading at home and is part of the San Jose Sharks "Reading is Cool" program. It is due back at the end of the month. Remember, nightly reading can include independent reading, reading aloud, and listening to a grown-up read. 20 minutes each night is recommended. Students may bring books home from school to read. They can be both classroom and school library books These books come home in a plastic zipper pouch. Please help your children build the habit of keeping school books in the pouch when they are not being actively read. This helps prevent mix-ups with public library books and personal book collections.
If you are planning on volunteering in any capacity on campus or chaperoning field trips, please submit a Volunteer Code of Conduct form. Here is a direct link:
Please sign up to HSC Membership Toolkit to receive emails from the Room Parents about your child's classroom needs and how you can best support their teacher, as well as for communications about the HSC school events and programs:
If you have not had a chance, please take a moment to fill out this survey with a little information about your child. I really appreciate it!
As a reminder, second graders are dismissed near the white picket fence of the garden, just outside the dismissal gates. I will be walking them to that spot, so if you could meet your child there, I would appreciate it. Thank you!
