Welcome back to school! I was so thrilled to see all the students yesterday morning. I hope you all had a nice winter break. The students all had fun things to share with one another! This week, we will work on making our own New Year's Resolutions. Students will create a personal resolution, a school resolution, and one for home. I will send these home in the Thursday folders, so you will be able to see their resolutions.
This week, we will begin a new module in math. Assessments from the last module will be going home in the Thursday folders. The new module covers addition and subtraction to 1000 as well as more complex word problems.
In writing, we will be working more on our expert nonfiction pieces, and in reading, we will be refreshing our reading stamina after being away for the break. We will also learn to identify adjectives in our reading. As a reminder, students bring home a monthly reading log to record their reading. They should be reading nightly. This can include ebooks, audiobooks, paper books, reading along with parents, reading to a sibling, and being read to by an adult. Building a daily reading habit at home will also help build their stamina and confidence for school!
You are invited to attend our 2nd Grade Information Writing Celebration on Tuesday 1/27 from 11:50-12:15. You will have a chance to read your child's information writing as well as offer compliments to other students and their writing pieces. It is a special time for the students to show off their hard work.
Linked here is a document with 300 high-frequency words students should be comfortable reading and spelling by the end of this school year. They are good words to watch for and correct in any writing they might do at home. An activity from time to time would be to have your child write down 10 of them and see how they do.
1/19/26 No school MLK Jr. Day
1/27/26 Information Writing Sharing Celebration 11:50-12:15
The reading log is to keep track of nightly reading at home and is part of the San Jose Sharks "Reading is Cool" program. It is due back at the end of the month. Remember, nightly reading can include independent reading, reading aloud, and listening to a grown-up read. 20 minutes each night is recommended. Students may bring books home from school to read. They can be both classroom and school library books These books come home in a plastic zipper pouch. Please help your children build the habit of keeping school books in the pouch when they are not being actively read. This helps prevent mix-ups with public library books and personal book collections.
Often after a holiday break it takes some time for all kids to get back into the swing of remembering all of the school rules. Please talk with your child about sharing, taking turns, and talking with teachers and staff when they are having trouble with other children. We also talk a lot about giving ‘Impact Statements’ when we have strong feelings about something.
If you would like to enroll your child in Math Kangaroo, a challenge math event on spring of 2026, the registration dates are listed here.
Please sign up to HSC Membership Toolkit to receive emails from the Room Parents about your child's classroom needs and how you can best support their teacher, as well as for communications about the HSC school events and programs:
