This week is Book Week! Students will have a fun book-themed prize or activity each day from the ASB students this week. The schedule is listed below. On Thursday, our classroom library will open, and we will have a chance to visit the school library to do a "book tasting" and sample different genres of books. Wednesday is P.E. and Maker Lab. Tomorrow we will do a fun growth mindset activity with our fellow second grade friends in Mr. Jarrett's class. Finally, we will meet our 6th grade buddies on Friday!
In math, we will be wrapping up Module 1, "Sums and Differences to 100". We will be working on fluency of facts to 20 as well as adding and subtracting strategies for numbers within 100. In addition, we will continue to practice working together on vertical surfaces, a best practice in mathematics education. I have included links to the Module 1 parent information sheets at the bottom of the newsletter.
In reading, we are working on building our stamina to read independently and practice quiet working during the workshop time. We will also be introduced to using our reading notebooks during mini-lessons and sharing out our learning after independent reading time. Finally, some of us will do some independent reading for a short reading assessment. In grammar, we will learn all about types of sentences, and in phonics, we will review long and short vowels.
As a reminder, this Thursday is Back to School Night. We will meet in Room 3 at 6:00-6:30 pm, and Dr. Lee will welcome parents for a short welcome message from 6:35-6:45 in the amphitheater.
In celebration and preparation of our classroom libraries being officially open to students, we are having a school-wide "Book Week".
Please note that Thursday is our Word Parade (more info below), and Friday is PJ Day!
Thursday (8/28) we will be having our annual Word Parade at Steindorf. This is a chance for students to think of all the beautiful language around them and dress up as a vocabulary word. We are not expecting students to come in full costumes! Keep it simple! Have a conversation with your student about items or accessories that you have around your house and then brainstorm words that would go along with those costumes or items. Here are some ideas:
Wear a sports jersey and come as a descriptive word for an athlete such as perseverance, athletic, or grit.
Wear a smiley face and come as enthusiastic, glee, or overjoyed.
Students can come dressed themselves and think of a word that describes themselves.
Headbands are great! You can hook almost anything to them…a lightbulb and you can be genius, illuminate, or inspiration! Attach a flower to a headband and suddenly you can be beautiful, aromatic, or mesmerizing.
If you are planning on volunteering in any capacity on campus or chaperoning field trips, please submit a Volunteer Code of Conduct form. Here is a direct link:
8/28 - Back to School Night-6pm
9/1 - No School - Labor Day
9/19 - Picture Day
Your children have a blue homework folder. This folder should come home every day and come back to school the following morning.
Starting this week you will see a nightly math homework page. It would be wonderful if your child was reading books for a bit each night as well.
I will share more helpful information about homework and the classroom during Back to School Night on 8/28 at 6pm in Room 3.
If you have not had a chance, please take a moment to fill out this survey with a little information about your child. I really appreciate it!
As a reminder, second graders are dismissed near the white picket fence of the garden, just outside the dismissal gates. I will be walking them to that spot, so if you could meet your child there, I would appreciate it. Thank you!
