Happy February!
Last week, we launched our Changemakers Biography unit by learning all about Abraham Lincoln. Over the next few weeks, students will be learning about various changemakers past and present, including George Washington Carver, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, Jane Goodall, Albert Einstein, and others.
Our new reading unit will focus on tackling more challenging books and challenging words. Students will select one or two "reach" books that are slightly above their level and try to meet challenges with harder words. This will also be the theme of upcoming phonics and spelling lessons.
This week for homework, students have an SEL follow-up paper on compassion and an compound word hunt in addition to the nightly math page.
On Friday, February 13th, students will be able to exchange valentines in class. Participation is optional, but students who bring valentines must bring them for the entire class. I will send a class list home in this week's Thursday folder, so you have names for the valentines.
This year, we are also trying to avoid candy valentines due to various allergies in class. Please send only non-food valentines. There are a lot of creative options!
Hooray! The Read-a-Thon began today at 6 am!
If you have not already done so, please register your child:
Register at www.getmovinfundhub.com using school code 655760c422c18, get ready to log reading minutes starting February 2nd, and share your student’s page if you’d like to invite support.
Visit www.cambrianef.org/readathon for more details on this year’s event.
In terms of recording minutes, I explained to the students that I will keep track of all in-class minutes for them. You do not need to keep track of those minutes. However, if your child reads during lunch or during another time when I am not there, then your child needs to report these minutes to you. In addition, please record your child's daily reading minutes outside of school.
This Friday is a dress-up day for the Read-a-Thon! Participation is optional.
NO Reading Log this month because of the Read-a-Thon. Please be on the lookout for a yellow Read-a-Thon bingo card in your child's homework folder. This is optional but a fun opportunity for students!

Linked here is a document with 300 high-frequency words students should be comfortable reading and spelling by the end of this school year. They are good words to watch for and correct in any writing they might do at home. An activity from time to time would be to have your child write down 10 of them and see how they do.
This chart might be helpful as a reminder of strategies we have worked on in class.
