We had a great time on Friday teaching one another about various landforms. Students worked incredibly hard to teach their second grade friends all about their landforms. Students ended up with a chart full of facts about 4 different landforms, and we will use this information as part of writing this week. We will also continue to work on the beginnings of opinion pieces. In reading, the focus will be on reading longer and stronger with our choice fiction books, and we will also use our informational reading skills to read about producers in various communities around the world.
In math, we will wrap up this module this week with an investigation of even and odd number patterns as well as review and then our assessment on Friday.
In grammar, we are zooming in on plural nouns and their spellings, and in phonics, we are looking at the schwa sound. The schwa is a sound that sounds like "uh" in words such as about (uh-bout) and telephone (tel-uh-phone).
As a reminder, report cards go home this Friday.
Please take time to read the rest of this newsletter below with the important events and reminders.
One of our amazing Room 3 students saved up 200 of his own shields to get the "Board Game Time" reward for the entire class! This was such an incredible gesture of generosity, and we appreciate him!
Next Friday, 3/13, students are welcome to bring a board game or card game from home to play in the afternoon. Please do not send Pokemon cards or anything electronic.
The second graders began their second PBL this past week. We are learning about wants vs. needs, producers, consumers, and how some common products we use get to us here in San Jose. This week we will be mapping where products come from and looking at the chain of events to get a product such as chocolate, bananas, coffee, and soccer balls to us.
Our driving question for this PBL is: How can we as second grade changemakers inform consumers about the benefits of fair trade products?
Second grade will be on the course from 10:55-11:25 with treats from 11:30-11:45

Spring conferences are right around the corner and will take place March 16th, 17th and 19th.
These conferences are by teacher request, and I have contacted families already.
If you have a specific concern and would like to request a conference, I will have a few open spot for you to sign up for an optional conference. Please understand that these are not for reporting out typical progress. Once I get my requested conferences scheduled, I will send out an email with the remaining spots.
March reading logs will go home this week. Please make sure your child is reading nightly.
Linked here is a document with 300 high-frequency words students should be comfortable reading and spelling by the end of this school year. They are good words to watch for and correct in any writing they might do at home. An activity from time to time would be to have your child write down 10 of them and see how they do.
