This week is our first week in our Reader's and Writer's Workshop curriculum. In reading, we will think back to all we learned in first grade to read strategically and apply those strategies in order to prepare to learn new ones. In writing, we will begin crafting small moment stories. Our word study pattern this week is words with -ai and -ay, and our grammar focus is on nouns.
In math, we will begin our new module. This week's lessons focus on measuring objects in centimeters and using the word "about" when the measurement is not exactly a whole centimeter. We will measure objects in class as well as transfer that to measuring objects on paper. We will also work together on vertical surfaces and learn a new math game. I have added the Module 2 parent newsletters in a section below.
In social studies, we will identify what a map is as well as parts of a map. We will look at a world map and identify continents and oceans. Students will transfer this to their own world map at the end of the week.
Please remember that we have P.E. on Wednesday, so proper shoes and a hat are recommended.

Students will bring home a September Reading Log this week. This log is to keep track of nightly reading at home and is part of the San Jose Sharks "Reading is Cool" program. It is due back at the end of the month. Remember, nightly reading can include independent reading, reading aloud, and listening to a grown-up read. 20 minutes each night is recommended. Students may bring books home from school to read. These books come home in a plastic zipper pouch. Please help your children build the habit of keeping school books in the pouch when they are not being actively read. This helps prevent mix-ups with public library books and personal book collections.
Please sign up to HSC Membership Toolkit to receive emails from the Room Parents about your child's classroom needs and how you can best support their teacher, as well as for communications about the HSC school events and programs:
If you are planning on volunteering in any capacity on campus or chaperoning field trips, please submit a Volunteer Code of Conduct form. Here is a direct link:

As a reminder, second graders are dismissed near the white picket fence of the garden, just outside the dismissal gates. I will be walking them to that spot, so if you could meet your child there, I would appreciate it. Thank you!
If you have not had a chance, please take a moment to fill out this survey with a little information about your child. I really appreciate it!
