We had such an exciting start to the week! This morning, we had a wonderful PORTS virtual field trip to Crystal Cove State Park in Southern California. We learned from a park ranger there who taught us all about the tide pool habitat! This was perfect preparation for our field trip next week! We also had a special guest, Mr. Diego the Entomologist. Mr. Diego introduced us to a variety of insects and taught us more about the declining monarch butterfly population and monarch conservation. We will begin our monarch butterfly PBL this week!
Also this week, we will be working our way through the beginning of Module 4 in math. In this part of the module, students will be learning a variety of different computation strategies for two-digit numbers. In reading and writing, we will be working hard on non-fiction. This Wednesday, we will be sharing our small moment writing with our Room 2 friends and giving/receiving feedback and compliments.
On Thursday, we will have Fall Stations in the afternoon. Thank you to all the parents who have helped coordinate these stations and to the parents who will be helping on Thursday.
Reminder: No school on Friday 10/31
Students are allowed to wear costumes on 10/30 this year. However, they need to be school-appropriate and follow the guidelines:
Costumes are optional! Students are not required to dress up.
Should not be too gruesome or bloody as younger children will be present.
Should be culturally and “humanly” sensitive (e.g. Native Americans may be offended by their regalia being worn as a “costume”, Sumo wrestler costumes and sombreros are also considered offensive).
No weapons: no fake…swords, lightsabers, knives, grenades, pitchforks, arrows, guns, spears, axes, etc. Nothing intended to be a weapon of the character is allowed. If in doubt, save it for Halloween night. Or, we’ll keep it until the end of the day. Wands are ok if not used to hit others or to cast evil spells! : )
Talk to your child about bringing a change of clothing if you are worried their costume might be damaged or accessories lost during the day.
Students will be learning in class from 9:45-dismissal, so their costume should not distract them or others.
We will have a character / spirit parade right after the morning assembly at approx. 9:15am. Parents are allowed to stay to watch. We will not have school on Friday, October 31st as we have a teacher inservice day.
Our field trip is coming up next Thursday, 11/6! More specifics will be sent out next week, but I wanted to remind you in advance that we are not scheduled to arrive back at school until around 4 pm that day. Please plan accordingly with appointments and after school activities. If your child will be going to extended care that day, we will make sure they get checked in.
Join us in celebrating Digital Citizenship Week! Each day, students will explore an important theme to help them become safe, responsible, and kind digital citizens:
Monday (Critical Thinking): Learning to think carefully about what they see online – Wear a cap to show you think before you click!
Tuesday (Curiosity - Superhero Day): Being safe explorers as they discover new things online – Wear a superhero shirt or cape!
Wednesday (Creativity - Creative Hair Day): Expressing themselves and understanding their digital footprint – Wear a creative hairstyle and let your creativity shine!
Thursday (Human Connection - Twin Day): Prioritizing kindness and face-to-face connections – Dress as twins with a friend and celebrate friendship!
Friday (Healthy Habits - Pajama Day): Building balanced and mindful tech habits – Wear your pajamas as we focus on healthy habits!
Talk with your child about what they're learning and how they can be positive digital citizens at home and school.

The reading log is to keep track of nightly reading at home and is part of the San Jose Sharks "Reading is Cool" program. It is due back at the end of the month. Remember, nightly reading can include independent reading, reading aloud, and listening to a grown-up read. 20 minutes each night is recommended. Students may bring books home from school to read. They can be both classroom and school library books These books come home in a plastic zipper pouch. Please help your children build the habit of keeping school books in the pouch when they are not being actively read. This helps prevent mix-ups with public library books and personal book collections.
