This Thursday, 1/22 is a special day for second grade! We will be visiting classrooms around Steindorf to read them our monarch butterfly books! This is our outreach activity to remind our school community how important the monarch butterflies are to our world. The books will then be housed in the school library for students at Steindorf to read at their leisure while in the library at lunch and during their library times. We will spend time today and tomorrow rehearsing our book presentations, so we are ready for Thursday. This gives students a chance to practice the second grade speaking standard to plan and deliver a presentation with details.
In math this week, we will continue to work on addition and subtraction to 1,000. The daily exposure to practice in class allows students to increase their efficiency with this skill and choose the strategies that work best for them.
In reading and writing, we will be wrapping up our informational units. The next units will be on opinion writing and tackling longer words and longer books.
Finally in science, we will be exploring sand and experiment to answer the question, "Is there an earth material smaller than sand?" All students should be able to explain the different types of rocks by size after our work last week. Feel free to ask them about it!
We are having a book swap!
Please take a moment to search your house for gently used (school-appropriate) books to swap.
Bring them to your class on January 26th, 27th, and 28th.
Kindergarteners will pick up your books.
You can swap them for different books when your class visits.
Classes will swap books on January 29th and 30th.
Students are welcome to visit KB at any time in February to exchange books.
Middle school students can continue the book swap in Room 12.
**There will be 2 categories- picture books and chapter books.
This week is a school-wide spirit week for mental health awareness. Students are invited to participate if they would like!

Linked here is a document with 300 high-frequency words students should be comfortable reading and spelling by the end of this school year. They are good words to watch for and correct in any writing they might do at home. An activity from time to time would be to have your child write down 10 of them and see how they do.
This chart might be helpful as a reminder of strategies we have worked on in class.

The reading log is to keep track of nightly reading at home and is part of the San Jose Sharks "Reading is Cool" program. It is due back at the end of the month. Remember, nightly reading can include independent reading, reading aloud, and listening to a grown-up read. 20 minutes each night is recommended. Students may bring books home from school to read. They can be both classroom and school library books These books come home in a plastic zipper pouch. Please help your children build the habit of keeping school books in the pouch when they are not being actively read. This helps prevent mix-ups with public library books and personal book collections.
