We are off to a great start this week! We have formed our PBL teams of three and are working on group norms/agreements. Students will begin thinking about deliverables this week in preparation to start on those deliverables when we get back from the Thanksgiving break.
In reading this week, we are working on reading text sets. Students are using Epic! to gather nonfiction books about one topic into a collection. Our workshop lessons will focus on looking at similarities, making connections, reading tricky words, and furthering understanding with topic vocabulary. In writing, we are looking at nonfiction mentor texts to see how authors teach their readers content vocabulary and trying to do the same thing in our nonfiction books.
In math, we started a fun subtraction practice game called Dino Math. It is a 7-level practice activity where students earn a dinosaur for each level and add those dinosaurs to their game boards. On Wednesday, we will take our mid-module assessment as a check-in to see how we are progressing with our addition and subtraction skills. On Friday, we will have some fun with our Room 2 friends solving Thanksgiving word problems scattered in both classrooms.
Finally, we will be seeing our sixth grade buddies on Thursday to do a fun turkey glyph and have some extra playtime.

The reading log is to keep track of nightly reading at home and is part of the San Jose Sharks "Reading is Cool" program. It is due back at the end of the month. Remember, nightly reading can include independent reading, reading aloud, and listening to a grown-up read. 20 minutes each night is recommended. Students may bring books home from school to read. They can be both classroom and school library books These books come home in a plastic zipper pouch. Please help your children build the habit of keeping school books in the pouch when they are not being actively read. This helps prevent mix-ups with public library books and personal book collections.
