I hope you all had a lovely weekend. This week is going to be a busy one! We started off the week by doing some informational reading connected to our science investigation on Friday about different categories of rocks. See if your child can name the 5 types we learned to separate and sort! We will be writing about how a rock changes shape over time as well as continue our self-authored informational writing. In math, we are continuing our work to solve problems involving addition and subtraction to 1,000 using a variety of strategies. I have attached a picture of some helpful strategies below in this newsletter.
This week, we will finish our PBL monarch books and rehearse presenting them to other classrooms. Next week, all classrooms will be invited to sign up for a time for one of the student groups to visit the class and share their book about monarchs.
In addition, this week we will spend some time learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We will work on some reading passages as well as do a directed drawing and a collaborative class poster. As a reminder, we do not have school next Monday 1/19 in honor of MLK Jr.'s birthday.
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, we are learning about his life and legacy throughout the week. Your child will be bringing home a paper assignment tomorrow. The assignment requires students to write 5 facts about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Here is a link to a video read-aloud that we enjoyed in class today. Your child is welcome to use this as their source of information, or you may help them find another resource. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e78RFp6O7w0
You are invited to attend our 2nd Grade Information Writing Celebration on Tuesday 1/27 from 11:50-12:15. You will have a chance to read your child's information writing as well as offer compliments to other students and their writing pieces. It is a special time for the students to show off their hard work.

Linked here is a document with 300 high-frequency words students should be comfortable reading and spelling by the end of this school year. They are good words to watch for and correct in any writing they might do at home. An activity from time to time would be to have your child write down 10 of them and see how they do.
This chart might be helpful as a reminder of strategies we have worked on in class.

The reading log is to keep track of nightly reading at home and is part of the San Jose Sharks "Reading is Cool" program. It is due back at the end of the month. Remember, nightly reading can include independent reading, reading aloud, and listening to a grown-up read. 20 minutes each night is recommended. Students may bring books home from school to read. They can be both classroom and school library books These books come home in a plastic zipper pouch. Please help your children build the habit of keeping school books in the pouch when they are not being actively read. This helps prevent mix-ups with public library books and personal book collections.
