I am sure you have heard, but in case you haven't, we have three class caterpillars! Mr. Jarrett spotted some monarch caterpillars in our butterfly garden, and right now they are devouring milkweed and preparing to become a chrysalis. The entire caterpillar stage only lasts two weeks from the egg hatch to chrysalis, so it is very exciting! Below is a photo of our caterpillars as they move into their next stage of metamorphosis. There is a teeny tiny caterpillar we will observe over the next week or two to see how it grows as well. It is younger than the others.
This week in reading workshop, we will be looking at story elements and looking at characters' feelings. We will make connections across different books in the same series and learn how stories often follow the same pattern with story elements. In writing, we continue to develop our small moments, this week learning how to revise parts of our stories in order to make them better and better. Speaking of revision, we will have a published author visit our class tomorrow! My dear friend and former Fammatre colleague, Mrs. Erich, will be coming to read her book, "Birds in Line," and talk to the kids about revision and the process she went through in order to publish her book.
For word study, we will continue to look at ways to read and spell long e and distinguish between common and proper nouns. We will also look at collective nouns. A long-e word sort will go home again this week for practice, and it is due on Friday.
In math, we will take our Module 2 Assessment on Tuesday. Then we begin our new Module 3 on Wednesday. This module covers place value, counting, and comparing numbers to 1,000.
Please remember that we have P.E. on Wednesday, so proper shoes and a hat are recommended. It is going to be hot this week, so please send a water bottle with your child as well.

The reading log is to keep track of nightly reading at home and is part of the San Jose Sharks "Reading is Cool" program. It is due back at the end of the month. Remember, nightly reading can include independent reading, reading aloud, and listening to a grown-up read. 20 minutes each night is recommended. Students may bring books home from school to read. They can be both classroom and school library books These books come home in a plastic zipper pouch. Please help your children build the habit of keeping school books in the pouch when they are not being actively read. This helps prevent mix-ups with public library books and personal book collections.
If you are planning on volunteering in any capacity on campus or chaperoning field trips, please submit a Volunteer Code of Conduct form. Here is a direct link:
Please sign up to HSC Membership Toolkit to receive emails from the Room Parents about your child's classroom needs and how you can best support their teacher, as well as for communications about the HSC school events and programs:
If you have not had a chance, please take a moment to fill out this survey with a little information about your child. I really appreciate it!
As a reminder, second graders are dismissed near the white picket fence of the garden, just outside the dismissal gates. I will be walking them to that spot, so if you could meet your child there, I would appreciate it. Thank you!
