4.2 Vocabulary & Context Clues
stories - a part of section of a building or a boat consisting of all rooms that are on the same level
obsession - an idea or thought that a person's mind continually focuses on
meteor - name given to an asteroid when one enters Earth's atmosphere and friction causes an observer to see it as a streak of light; a "shooting star"
starboard - the side of a ship or aircraft that is on the right when one is facing forward
superstitious - having a belief that good or bad luck will result due to chance or certain circumstances
lunged - to make a sudden darting or thrusting movement forward
crate - a slatted wooden case used for transporting or sorting goods
Context Clues
Context Clues are hints that the author gives to help define a difficult or unusual word. The clue may appear within the same sentence as the word to which it refers, or it may follow in a preceding sentence.
