5.1 Vocabulary & Graphic Sources / Text Features
trotted - run at a moderate pace
paradise - an ideal place or location
native - a person born in a specified place or associated with a place by birth
plantation - an estate on which crops (i.e. coffee, sugar, tobacco) are cultivated
sugarcane - a perennial tropical grass with tall stout jointed stems from which sugar is extracted
foreman - a worker who supervises and directs others
rented - to pay someone for the use of something (typically property, land, or vehicles)
Graphic Sources / Text Features
Maps, charts, diagrams, illustrations, captions, and photos are examples of graphic sources. These additional visual text features help a reader better understand information as we we read or add additional information that was not discussed in the text. These examples also organize information into easy to read and quick to understand visuals.
