For The Howard de Walden Estate, we delivered a new development of 18 upmarket apartments at New Cavendish Street, London W1. Located in the Harley Street Conservation Area, the scheme involved constructing two new buildings behind the retained 1890s facades of four townhouses, resulting in a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom apartments.
The new building's design allows for larger living spaces by incorporating a single central stair and lift, particularly within the footprint of two of the original townhouses. A clever half-landing stair arrangement navigates the varying floor levels across the other two properties. At the rear, the modern elevation uses traditional detailing with white glazed bricks, which maximize light reflection into the new courtyards. The design also subtly honors the original plot subdivisions of the four townhouses through its use of projections and indents.
With a contract value of £7 million, the project was completed in 2016 and achieved a Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 rating. Key to this achievement were enhanced fabric insulation, whole-house ventilation, and underfloor heating supplied by air source heat pumps.
