The Prince Consort Village, located in London, provides 416 apartments and rooms in cluster flats for students of the Royal College of Music. This development offers a variety of spaces for musical practice, including 23 music practice rooms and two landscaped courtyards with dedicated performance areas. Additional amenities include a film room, a gym, and other communal spaces.
The project was developed for the Royal College of Music by Campus Living Villages. ALA was retained by Campus Living Villages to review the contractor’s proposals and monitor the construction work for quality and compliance. The design was a collaboration between TP Bennett and Stride Treglown, who worked under novation to the contractor, Balfour Beatty.
To accelerate the timeline, the construction utilized a modular system with pre-fitted, steel-framed volumetric room modules. These units were fabricated off-site, then stacked and clad on-site. The system's enhanced soundproofing was crucial for separating apartments from practice areas. The scheme was designed to achieve BREEAM "Excellent," incorporating roof-mounted solar panels (PVs) and green roofs. The project had a contract value of £24 million and was completed in 2016.
