In a developer-led competition with Akeler (now Goodman) and Bowmer & Kirkland, our team secured the contract for this flagship headquarters building. The project was central to BP's new brand launch and their "Blue Chalk" workplace strategy, which aimed to foster a more democratic and collaborative culture.
The 22,000m² building's unique "waterboatman" plan arranges office wings around a central street, a design that maximizes workspace flexibility. This central hub is home to social areas and generous stairwells and lifts, promoting spontaneous interaction among employees.
Sustainability was a core focus of the project. We incorporated a number of environmentally conscious features, including the use of recycled materials, combined heat and power (CHP), rainwater harvesting, and a sustainable drainage system within a new, biodiverse landscape.
The project received widespread recognition, winning "Best Bespoke Development outside Central London" and "Best of the Best" at the Property Week Office Development Awards. It was also honored with a Design award from the Aberdeen Civic Society, the "Green Building of the Year" at the Scottish Property Awards, and a "Building of Distinction Award" from the Aberdeen Society of Architects. The building was completed in 2008 with a contract value of £28 million (Cat A).
