For The Howard de Walden Estate, we delivered a new development of 18 upmarket apartments at New Cavendish Street, London W1. Located in the Harley Street Conservation Area, the project involved constructing two new buildings behind the retained 1890s facades of four historic townhouses. The scheme provides a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom apartments.
The design of the new buildings enabled larger living spaces by incorporating a single central stair and lift, especially within the footprint of two of the original townhouses. A clever half-landing stair arrangement was used to accommodate the varying floor levels across the other two properties. At the rear, a modern elevation features traditional detailing with white glazed bricks to maximize light reflection into new courtyards. The design also subtly honors the original plot subdivisions of the townhouses through the use of projections and indents.
Completed in 2016 with a contract value of £7 million, the project achieved a Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 rating. This was made possible through enhanced fabric insulation, whole-house ventilation, and underfloor heating supplied by air source heat pumps.
