In Sunderland, the Rainton Bridge project features a cluster of five simple, rectilinear office buildings. These structures are arranged to create a central, landscaped courtyard that serves as a recreational heart, protected from the region's strong winds. The bright, fresh design of the architecture was a deliberate choice to elevate the buildings and distinguish them from the surrounding industrial context.
The two and three-story buildings, totaling over 110,000 sq ft, were developed with a comprehensive low-carbon strategy. This approach guided key design decisions, including the buildings' orientation, architectural form, and the choice of materials and service systems.
The project was completed in 2008 and has been recognized with several awards, including "Best Commercial Project" from Sunderland City Council and the National Landscape Award from the British Association of Landscape Architects.
