WARNING: failure to comply with these guidelines constitute a breach in experimental ethics and will get us in big trouble with the IRB!
Response completeness
Participants must complete all tasks/questionnaires FULLY; they CANNOT elect to skip certain tasks/questions (unless the questionnaire specifically allows that option)
Participants who are unwilling/unable to comply are...
Free to withdraw at any time, for any reason, and without question or penalty
Entitled to all the benefits they would have otherwise enjoyed (see pay rates)
Exception: triggering/sensitive questionnaires asking about suicidal ideation (e.g. Beck's Depression Inventory), etc.
MRI exclusion criteria:
Note: The lab has run fMRI participants in the past under Takeo Wantanabe's and Matthew Nassar's protocols. The following are the exclusion criterion used for those studies:
Left-handed
Pregnant or possibly pregnant
Medical history of brain injury or neurological disorder
Metallic objects/particles in body
Confidentiality of data
Direct identifiers (i.e. anything that could be used to identify a participant's identity) must be stored separately from response data
All response data must therefore be anonymized using a code that is stored separately
Access to direct identifiers and the identifying code is strictly limited to trained research staff
Miscellaneous rights
Participants must be given opportunities to take stretch breaks and/or enjoy rest periods
Ages 18-40
Exclusion criteria:
For pharmacological (e.g. tolcapone, cabergoline, etc.) studies: you must be healthy, have no medical history of brain injury, mental/psychiatric disorders (including depression, anxiety, and ADD/ADHD), or drug or alcohol abuse.
You must not be currently taking any medications (with the exceptions of birth control or antihistamines or those approved by our physician).
You should not participate if you are or may be pregnant, have a history of alcoholism, previous liver or kidney impairment, elevated liver function tests, or a previous adverse reaction to tolcapone. In addition, it is important that you do not take any unapproved medications while participating in this study. It is also important not to drink alcohol. Using alcohol or other drugs (including prescription, nonprescription, and alcohol, with the exceptions of birth control or antihistamines or those approved by our physician) while participating in this study may cause potentially dangerous interactions with tolcapone.
For regular behavioral/EEG studies:
To participate, you must: be healthy; be at least 18 years old; have no medical history of brain injury, mental/psychiatric/psychological disorders, or drug or alcohol abuse; and not be currently taking medication for depression, anxiety, or ADD/ADHD.
Ages 40 and up
Exclusion criteria:
Generally same as in HA protocol
For visual screening: TO BE UPDATED -- check PD consents for info
For participants with Parkinson's Disease (PD): exclusions are determined by collaborating medical doctor who helps us with recruiting participants to our studies
Common across all studies
Okay for participants to win/lose additional money, but hourly base pay must not be affected
If participants withdraw after signing consent for any reason, they must be paid; details vary according to protocol
Behavioral consent (with or without EEG or saliva)
1 study credit OR $10 per hour
If participants withdraw, they must be paid the full hourly rate or granted the study credit
Participant with Parkinson's Disease (PD)
$20/hr pay rate
Controls have $10/hr pay rate
Neuroimaging (specifically fMRI) consent
1 study credit OR $25 per hour
If participants withdraw, they must be paid the full hourly rate or granted the study credit
MTurk & Prolific (Online Studies)
$0.11 per minute for calculating base pay rate
MTurkers will suggest a that a "HIT Worth Turking For (HWTF)" would be ~$10/hr though
If participants withdraw (e.g. due to triggering questionnaire sensitivity), they must be paid the full hourly rate
