The CITI online training program covers a variety of research topics and is required of EVERY person in the lab who works with human subjects. Click here for information on how to complete your CITI training. You will need to complete training for Group 1 (Social-Behavioral-Educational Researchers) and complete the elective modules entitled "Internet-Based Research" and "Students in Research."
If you have worked in a research lab previously and have completed CITI training already, click here for instructions on how to update your institution status. Please alert the lab manager once you have completed/transferred your CITI training!
Send the lab manager a PDF copy of your CITI completion report.
Complete the Conflict of Interest form at http://infoed.brown.edu/
Send your answers to the following questions to the lab manager:
Is your annual Assurance of Compliance form (and, if necessary, reporting form) accurate and up-to-date as of the time of this submission, as required by the COI Policy?
Do you have a significant financial interest (SFI) that is related to this research protocol? “Related” could mean the research involves products, technology, intellectual property, or services made, owned, or provided by the entity/ies in which you have an SFI and/or that the SFI could be affected by the proposed research or its results.
Send a copy of the certificate to the lab manager:
In the left-side navigation menu, hover over "Conflict of Interest" and then click on "Locate My Records"
Hover over your name, then click on "View"
In the new window that opens, click on "Submissions", then on whatever subfolder that appears next (example: "19-Jun-2018_2137_txn")
Click on the PDF logo (confusingly labeled "Upload")
Save the PDF and send to the lab manager
Prior to running subjects, you should have a solid understanding of our lab's ethics protocol. Read about participants' rights and pay here, which includes information on subject participation exclusion criteria, and read about the tasks and surveys we are approved to run here. It is also important for you to be familiar with our safety plan and our debriefing protocol.
Make sure you have completed your CITI training and COI reporting and have sent the certificates to the lab manager
Metcalf Research Building (190 Thayer St.)
Keys to the lab room and card access to the building will be granted on a case-by-case basis for undergrad RAs. Please contact the lab manager if you believe this applies to you.
Grad students and postdocs should contact the lab manager for instructions on how to obtain keys and card access. Note: You will need your Brown ID before receiving keys and Metcalf after hours card swipe access.
If you're a visiting student or scholar, you will need to fill out this Sponsored ID form to receive a Brown email address and ID card. The CLPS department admin assistant (nicole_andrews@brown.edu) will need to approve your form submission before Brown will issue your ID to you.
Once you obtain your lab key, please keep in mind that if you are the last to leave the lab, make sure to lock the door!
Carney Institute (164 Angell St., 4th Floor)
Using the elevator to get to the 4th floor requires a Brown ID. If you want to access Carney outside of 9 am - 5 pm work hours, you'll need to contact the Carney Institute manager kathleen_gerlach@brown.edu and cc Michael on the email for approval.
Graduate students will have a "start up fund" that will cover the purchase of a new laptop.
See Pedro (general IT support in Key Places + Contacts to know) to purchase.
Post-Docs normally use a laptop or computer through funding but can get a monitor from the lab (see Lab Manager to see what is available) or Pedro.
Slack is a group-messaging app. Our lab doesn't really use Slack as a group, but it is used for instant messaging between some members (mostly grad students). If you're an undergraduate RA, however, you must join the RA Slack.
Click here to join our lab's Slack group!

Emails are our primary mode of communication and announcements, with some members (especially Michael) preferring Google Chat for instant messaging.
There is a Carney Innovation Space Slack used to communicate and broadcast interesting talks or events going on in the Carney Space (164 Angell Street). If you would like to be added to this Slack/listserv, click here to join the Slack!

To receive credit for your research involvement in a given semester:
We generally expect 6-10 hrs/week (min.), though this will vary depending on project needs and your level of involvement
You will write a 1 page (min.) essay describing what you did that semester DUE to Michael at the end of finals period
This serves as a reflection period for you to think about what you have learned(!), but helps Michael to know what you've done.
You can discuss ideas or papers related to the project you're working on; data collection methods (e.g. EEG, behavioral, Amazon Mechanical Turk, etc.).
If you have any questions re: this essay, feel free to ask the Lab Manager, your research supervisor, or Michael.
