Policy
Brown Insurance does not cover any personal property. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to all student-athletes to have their own personal property insurance.
In the event a student-athlete does not have personal property insurance, there are two options when personal belongings are lost or stolen while participating in an athletic team activity:
Teams can elect to reimburse a student for their lost or stolen property from their team budget
Head coaches, with the approval of their sport administrator, can determine if reimbursement for lost personal items is appropriate
The student-athlete can file a claim with their parent's homeowner’s insurance
Student-athletes are advised to keep an inventory of their property, complete with serial numbers, as a way to prove ownership in the event they need to file a claim with an insurance company
If neither option 1 or 2 is utilized, the student-athlete will not be compensated for lost or stolen items.
Please note, the University is not responsible for theft of personal property or funds during team related travel. However, stolen items from student-athletes listed on an official police report may be eligible for reimbursement. In the event of a crime during team travel, please contact local authorities and report the incident to the Department of Public Safety immediately. In addition, please notify the Business Office within 48 hours of the incident.
