For more than 20 years, Pender EMS and Fire, Inc. has been committed to serving the residents of Pender County. What many people may not know, is that the agency is not a part of the county government. Instead, it's an independent, private non-profit organization that is contracted with Pender County to provide both emergency medical and fire protection services".
At the March 10th BOCC meeting (https://penderconc.portal.civicclerk.com)/, Commissioner Springer made a motion to suspend the meeting procedural rules (28:50 in meeting) and presented a resolution (2:44:00 in meeting) that was not listed on the public agenda. The first resolution that Commissioner Springer attempted to pass, was to completely dissolve the Pender EMS & Fire, Inc. Board of Directors. This was halted after the county attorney Trey Thurman advised the board this was illegal. The resolution was then amended and was passed to remove all appointed community Pender EMS & Fire, Inc. Board of Directors members and to fast-track the process of a county acquisition by effectively bringing "all EMS and Fire services under the county government's direct supervision." The resolution was approved in a 3-to-1 vote.
