Matthew Perry, an advocate against substance abuse and actor, was reported dead on October 28, 2023. Perry was adored by many for his portrayal of Chandler Bing on the popular sitcom, FRIENDS. However, Perry’s reputation stretched far beyond the world of stardom. His memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing was written to humanize Perry and unveil his struggle with alcoholism and addiction.
In an interview on the Q with Tom Power, Perry claimed that his memoir was, “all about helping people.”
This memoir was said to have been a “cleansing experience,” and it contributed greatly to Matthew’s legacy. Matthew made it clear that he did not want to be remembered only for his acting, but for his fight against addiction and the stigma that surrounds it. Perry went on to recall his first time ever having a drink, and he stated that he had “felt better than [he] ever had in [his] entire life.” He continued, and said that he thought to himself, “this is probably what normal people feel like all the time.”
In the same interview, Perry expressed that drinking made him “feel at home for the very first time.” This led Perry to believe that he did have an issue with drinking, even if he did not understand it. In addition to this, Perry opened up about how his colon burst due to his opioid addiction. He was in a coma for two weeks, and had to use a colostomy bag for nine months. His family was told that Perry had a two percent chance to live, but miraculously, Perry survived with the help of an ECMO machine. As time went on, it became clear to Matthew that he was not alone in his journey, and he made a commitment to try to use his fame to help as many people as he could.
After Perry’s death, the National Philanthropic Trust established the Matthew Perry Foundation in his honor. This foundation is intended to continue Perry’s dedication to helping those who struggle with addiction. Its mission statement is a direct quote from Perry, “When I die, I don’t want ‘Friends’ to be the first thing that’s mentioned- I want helping others to be the first thing that’s mentioned. And I’m going to live the rest of my life proving that. Addiction is far too powerful for anyone to defeat alone. But together, one day at a time, we can beat it down.”
While Matthew Perry hoped to be remembered for far more than just an actor on FRIENDS, his achievements as such cannot be forgotten. Perry portrayed Chandler for the entirety of the show, which was ten seasons. His sarcasm, sense of humor, and loveable personality made him fairly popular. Chandler was witty and charming, but loyal and dependable. Perry’s representation of Chandler helped show the world his heart, allowing him to become as loved as his character.
Matthew Perry’s death was devastating to family, FRIENDS, and fans alike; yet his memory will live on through his dedication, love for others, and optimistic worldview.
