TO DO: Complete the See Think Wonder project before introducing the webpage and revealing the Cubist Art Movement
“Cubism is an art movement that made its debut in 1907. Pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, the style is characterized by fragmented subject matter deconstructed in such a way that it can be viewed from multiple angles simultaneously.”
TO DO: Select one of the artworks above from the collection of prints at the front of the room to take back to your table. Also pick up a vocabulary packet and a pair of scissors. You're going to cut out the vocabulary words and assign the aspects that best relate to your artowork on a .
TO DO: Read the instructions and watch the video below. Fill out and turn in the planning worksheet.
The first step will be to take pictures for a self portrait (you'll need a partner, selfies will not work for this.)
Before shooting, watch this video: https://youtu.be/AswsK-88Jgc (also shown below)
You will take pictures with a partner of one another at different angles. Be sure to shoot at different focal lengths. Shoot high, shoot low, shoot different expressions, shoot the sides and maybe even the back of your head.
All images should take place in one location. Each of you can choose a different location for your own portraits but you should not move. The background should of the same venue/vista/view.
Make sure you are shooting portrait style (vertical not horizontal) in order to fill the frame with "mostly" your face and some shoulder. It is fun to include some clothing and background in your cubist image.
Be sure to take the images in a well-lit area using natural (not lightbulbs or a flash) light.
Also make sure you aren't facing the sun... no squinting.
Again, the first cubist photo will be a self portrait. The image must be an image of yourself.
After taking the images
Return to class and upload the images. Do not throw ANY images away.
Upload them to photoshop and consider doing them in grayscale (black-and-white?) (optional)
Complete the cubism photo techniques discussed in the "CUBISM PHOTOGRAPHY TUTORIAL" video below.
USE THE ENTIRE FRAME. (Notice how, in the example video, Mr. Wan uses the edges of the image to take the cubism effect past the outer edge of the image. You should be pushing the effect beyond just your face/head. The background and edges should be part of the process)
IMAGE SHOULD BE PORTRAIT-STYLE. MOSTLY HEAD-AND-SHOULDERS.
It'll take more than one try to get it right. Make multiple attempts, choose your "favorite" and upload/share it with Mr. Bishoff in .jpg format.
MORE:
Consider doing multiple portraits.
If you did one in color you can do an additional one it black-and-white.
Consider running your portrait through the Spoon Graphics to add an "aging" or "film grain" technique: https://blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/videos/5-photoshop-tips-add-authentic-black-white-analog-film-effects-photos (thanks to Brianna for bringing these to my attention... very cool)
GRADING: Download Rubric Here
Final images to be exported as JPG files. (not downsized & not PDF files)
ONE image of yourself as a cubist self-portrait.
CubistSelf_2_FirstLastName.jpg
ONE image of “not a person” that is meaningful to you.
CubstThing_2_FirstLastName.jpg
Upload to your google drive and share it with Mr. Bishoff. Your images MAY be shared on the screen or displayed in the hall or on campus.
Your "non-portrait" cubist image can be of just about anything.
Take pictures of the object or location from multiple angles and focal lengths.
Images must be taken in the same location so that the lighting is consistent.
Make sure the space is well lit and images are sharp.
These must be images that YOU take... not images found on the internet or taken by someone else.
You may do the "non-portrait" cubist image in black and white, sepia-tone, or color.
Do not run the image through extreme filters. It needs to look "mostly realistic."
It'll take more than one try to get it right. Make multiple attempts, choose your "favorite" and upload/share it with Mr. Bishoff in .jpg or .pdf format @ 200dpi.
Consider running it through a spoongraphics effect AFTER turning in the non-effected version.
