For this in-class assignment, you will be using a layer mask to turn color images into a black and white images with part of the color showing through. Start by finding a great image to work with - a color photo with an object you can isolate (like a butterfly, tropical bird, flower or colorful vehicle).
TO DO: Complete THREE large spot color projects. At least two must be photographs. The third can be a photograph or a painting or illustration. Size to 10" wide or tall. Export as .jpeg files and share them with Mr. Bishoff through Google Drive. (instructions below)
Create a folder on your desktop called “spot color.” This will be where you save all of your work for this project.
[1] Using images.Google.com, research photo ideas. On the Google images menu there is a text-button called “Tools.” Click on it, select Size and check “Large.” This will show you only large images in your image search.
[2] Find three or four images that would work for this project and save them by clicking on the image and dragging the LARGE image to the folder on your desktop. Double check to make sure they saved correctly as “large” images. At least two of your images need to be photographs. One can be a painting or illustration. You must complete three total.
Launch Photoshop. Open your image on your desktop by going to the upper menu > File > Open. Look for Desktop on this panel, select it, find your image and click Open on the lower right corner of the panel. On the upper menu, go to Image > Image Size. Under Document Size change the long-dimension of your image to 10” with the Constrain Proportions chain-link clicked. Make the Resolution of your image 200.
On the lower right side of the Photoshop window, you will see a Layers Panel. A small icon of your image will be in this panel labeled “Background.”
[3] Right-click your background layer and select “Duplicate Layer.” Now your image will show up twice in the Layers Panel. Select the top layer by clicking it, go to the main upper menu for the next step.
[4] Select Photoshop > Image > Adjustments > Black and White... This will bring up an Adjustment panel. Experiment with the sliders and make adjustments to your black and white image using the options on the panel.
With you black and white photo layer selected, look at the bottom of the Layers panel.
[5] There is a small symbol at the bottom that looks like a white rectangle with a hole in it. This is a Layer Mask. Click on that button. It will make a white square on the Layer next to your black and white image.
Select the brush tool from your tool box. With the Color picker at the bottom of your tool box, make sure the top box is set to Black.
[6] Adjust your brush so that it is soft and small.
[7] Paint carefully over the portion of your image that you want to transform into color. Make your paintbrush very small for the edges of your colored object. Use the magnify tool to zoom into your image for the detail work.
Preserve the file and its layers by saving it as a .PSD file in a folder on your desktop. THEN save your file as a .jpg file, and turn the .jpg in to Google Classroom.
