Abstraction- art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality but instead use shapes, colors, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect.
Non-Objective- a type of abstract art that is usually, but not always, geometric and aims to convey a sense of simplicity and purity.
Distortion- pull or twist out of shape.
Geometric- angles, manmade; the geometric information which remains when location, scale, orientation and reflection are removed from the description of a geometric object.
Organic- are defined as shapes that are irregular or asymmetrical in appearance and tend to have a curvy flow to them. Nearly all shapes found in nature are organic in appearance. Examples are leaves, flowers etc.

If you put the word 'abstract' into a thesaurus some of the similar words suggested are: theoretical; conceptual; intangible. Among its many antonyms (or words with opposite meanings) is ‘simple’. The word abstract suggests something vague, difficult, not easily grasped. But abstract art doesn't have to be any of those things. On the contrary, an artist working in an abstract way might want to make something striking and beautiful, whisking us away from the humdrum realities of the everyday. In other words, they might be interested in art for art’s sake, pure and simple.
The abstract expressionists were mostly based in New York City, and also became known as the New York school. The name evokes their aim to make art that while abstract was also expressive or emotional in its effect. They were inspired by the surrealist idea that art should come from the unconscious mind, and by the automatism of artist Joan Miró.
Expressionism refers to art in which the image of reality is distorted in order to make it expressive of the artist’s inner feelings or ideas
