Collage comes from the French word coller which means “to glue.”
It is the art of gluing down pieces of paper made from pre-existing images; construction paper, magazines, newspaper, found materials, etc.
Originated from PABLO PICASSO & GEORGES BRAQUE around 1912 with the cubist collages, and has become widespread as artists developed increasingly open attitudes to the media of art. Essentially art can be made of anything or any combination of things.
Directions: There are 3 different types of collage. Using the descriptions, write down characteristics of each type of collage.
A picture made by gluing small pieces of torn or cut paper with different colors and textures. The pieces are arranged to create shapes, patterns, or a complete image.
A picture made by carefully cutting and gluing pieces of paper to fit together and form an image.
A picture made by painting or coloring paper, cutting it into shapes, and gluing it to a surface to make a raised, 3D effect.
Research ONE artist from each type of collage below.
You will need to google search them to find more information and to see more examples of their work.
Discuss the materials they used, the subject matter of their drawings, their style, etc.

Directions: Create a list of 10 possible materials you could use to create a collage.
Plan to include 3 layers = foreground, middle ground, and background!
Start with a simple sketch of your image below. Label the sketch with the colors that need to go in each area.
Redraw your image larger onto drawing paper or a thick mat board. If using paper, tape it down to a board.
Begin searching for your colors in magazines. Tear out any large areas of colors that match the ones you labeled.
Tear or cut the paper into pieces no larger than your fingernail. Store your pieces in zip-lock bags.
First, work on your largest areas, and glue the paper down using a glue stick or glue bottle & brush.
Details should be last!
