I Don't Want To Be Forgotten
I don’t want to be forgotten
Don’t want to be called “common”
Leave my footprints in the sand
Not a speck of dust in the palm of a hand
Not a common fish in the sea
Not one in a forest of oak trees
I want to be
Someone so carefree
Not a person with lots of fame
But somebody who can claim
They made a positive change
In a world so strange
Leave my footprints in the sand
Not a piece of dirt on the land
Not a ant on a hill
Not a single porcupine's quill
Leave my footprints in the sand
Not a thread in a wool strand
Want to make my family proud
Not drowned out by other sounds
I don’t want to be forgotten
Want to be called uncommon

From Homeschool to High School
Chapter One::
August 21st.
Today is my first day of school. I hope I make a good impression. I don’t want to be known as the “New Girl”. I wish we didn’t move. I almost wish Phil didn’t get his hockey scholarship. My friends would call me too kind and too compliant, but I just want the best for my family, even if that means moving away. I’ll miss my friends. Ella and Camilla were the best. I hope we don’t lose contact, but whatever happens, I’ll always remember them as my first best friends. I hope I’m able to make new friends, I don’t need to make a lot, but at least one friend so I won't be alone all year. But if I don’t I guess the bathrooms are calling my name at lunch time.
- Avery Sonlie
Avery was walking out the door, on her way to school.
“Have fun, dear!” Her mom shouts from the kitchen. “Make some friends!”
“I’ll see you later Mom!” Avery shouts in response. As she steps out the door, she takes a breath of the fresh air. It smells like autumn leaves and fresh grass. Nothing like her home. She sighs as she remembers her home, cinnamon in the air and crunchy leaves underfoot. She steps onto a leaf, expecting a crunch, but getting nothing. Another sigh. Avery misses home, the smell of spicy cinnamon and fresh grass, being homeschooled, reading books all day, and hanging out with her friends. Her phone rings, and she pulls it out. The name reads, The Most Annoying Friend Ever!🐀 She smiles. Ella, her best friend. She picks up, holding the phone close to her face.
“AHHHHHHHHH!” Avery flinches, wincing as her ears ring.
“Ella! I’m going to go deaf, and it’ll be all your fault!” She shouts back into the phone.
“Sorry! I’m sorry! I’m just excited. It’s my first time talking to you after your move from Merryville. We all miss you!” Ella says, smiling.
“Is that Avery?” She hears a distant shout in the background.
“Yeah! She finally picked up!” The screen shakes and all Avery sees is a mouth.
“I can’t believe you! You abandoned us!” A voice says dramatically as Camilla’s short curly red hair pops into view.
Avery is full on grinning as she says, “Hi Camilla, miss me?”
“Of course I missed you, you annoying little Avery!” Camilla says, pulling back and glaring at her. “Where are you, and why are you outside?”
“My goodness! It’s a rare sighting of an Avery OUTSIDE!” Ella says gasping theoretically. “Look at that! Her blue eyes are glowing in the sunlight! Her red hair, reflecting the sun! Oh my goodness! I never realized you were a VAMPIRE! Are you burning up!?”
She laughed as she said, “No, I’m on my way to school. No more homeschooling with my favorite people anymore.”
“IMAGINE!” Camilla says as she cackles. “No more hanging out with us…” She suddenly gets quiet.
“I know, I’ll miss seeing your faces everyday. I wish we didn’t have to move to Seldworn for Phil’s hockey.”
“Yeah, your brother sucks. Imagine making your entire family move, for his college. I mean, isn’t college supposed to be where you get independent.” Ella says, as she comes into frame again. The sound of laughter and cars caused Avery to look up.
“I’m at school. I’ll call you guys back later, okay?” She says.
“Okay, we miss you. Don’t go making anymore best friends, we can’t handle the competition.” Camilla teases, as Ella waves goodbye. Avery hangs up as she takes a deep breath and looks at her new school. Seldworn High, here I come.
