Academics

When can I register?

You can find the registration dates on the Academic Calendar. Your MyASU will also provide a notice on when registration opens for future semesters. Above is an example of where to locate your enrollment date.

What are class sessions?

You may notice the Course Sequence plan includes a column for “Session”. Sessions refer to the length of the semester that the class runs. In Spring/Fall, sessions A and B are roughly 7.5 weeks and do not overlap. A session runs for the first 7.5 weeks and then the B session starts and runs for 7.5 weeks. Session C runs the full length of a semester which is roughly 16 weeks. Summer operates differently; the Academic Calendar displays start and end dates for sessions A, B, and C for all semesters.

What is a Course Sequence?

Your Course Sequence is a live document that shows you what classes to take each semester. We update this document with the 5-digit course numbers for easy registration. It is important to follow the assigned course sequence and discuss any variation from the sequence with an academic advisor.

You can watch the "Registering for Classes" video for a tutorial on how to register for classes using the 5-digit course numbers. Must be signed into your My ASU account to watch.

Do I have to follow the Course Sequence?

If circumstances find you needing to veer from the recommended Course Sequence, we invite you to schedule an advising appointment to devise an altered course sequence together. Any changes to your course sequence will also need to be reflected on the Plan of Study (iPOS) and approved by advising.

What is good Academic Standing?

In order to graduate from a graduate program at ASU, students must maintain a 3.0 or higher for their cumulative GPA, iPOS GPA, and their graduate-level GPA. Specifically for your Applied Project class, a grade of B or higher is required.

If you are unable to obtain a 3.0 GPA in your cumulative, iPOS, and graduate-level GPA, you will not be in good academic standing and will be on probation.

Keep in mind that any courses you take at ASU will affect your GPAs and academic standing in your program even if they are not required courses. Students may be dismissed if they are not maintaining good academic standing. This is reviewed at the end of every semester.

Do I need access to students for all my classes?

This depends on the class as well as the program. Please reach out to us if you have questions.

What is the Culminating Experience (Applied Project)?

EDA/ECD/SPE/SED/EED 593: Applied Project is the culminating experience course for a Master’s Degree program. A grade of B or higher is required for graduation

The student will work with his/her instructor to engage in an action research cycle, critically evaluate educational research related to an action research problem, apply educational concepts to professional experience, and reflect on his/her practice to modify and/or improve instruction.

Do I need to be enrolled every semester in this program?

Graduate students are required to maintain continuous enrollment per the Graduate College Policy Handbook which requires students to complete at least 1 graduate-level credit hour in their term of admission and every Fall or Spring semester afterward. Students will be discontinued from the program, and have to re-apply to return if they break continuous enrollment. If you cannot take classes during a semester it is important to inform your advisors.

What is the iPOS?

The interactive plan of study (iPOS) is an agreement between the student, academic advising unit, and Graduate College. It maps the course requirements for degree completion and must be completed by graduate students at the end of their first semester. You will gain access to the iPOS system once you are within 90 days of the program start. The iPOS system is an additional system used to track your degree progress other than course registration that takes place on your My ASU page. For this program, an academic advising appointment is not required for students to be able to complete the iPOS. Use the materials list to round up the items needed for your iPOS submission, and then use the guided instructions button for a step-by-step presentation.

For general iPOS information, please visit the Plan of Study (iPOS) page in the Student Resources section.

What are the different pathways?

What if I am a Paraprofessional or Instructional Assistant?

It is possible to use your paid paraprofessional or IA/TA position for your Internships and/or Student Teaching. If you hold one of these positions you should talk to Advising and Professional Education Services (PES) to ensure you are on the correct pathway and confirm your position is in alignment with your program requirements.

What is the difference between Internships, Student Teaching, and Apprentice Teaching?

Students in the Teacher Certification programs are required to complete experiential learning courses. Please plan accordingly as this may require making arrangements such as not working during student teaching. All placements are arranged and/or managed by our Professional Experience Services (PES) and Community Education Operations (for our Educational Leadership students). Depending on your program, you will most likely have the following experiences:

If you have further questions, please contact PES at MLFTC-PES@asu.edu or CommunityEdServices@asu.edu  (for Educational Leadership).

What are the requirements for teacher certification?

ASU professional licensure or certification programs are intended to prepare students for potential licensure or certification in Arizona. This means our licensure or certification programs will align with the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) certification requirements. Please refer to the ADE's website for a comprehensive list of requirements by certification path. You will complete most of what is listed in their certification requirements (i.e. coursework and practicum experiences). However, please be mindful of other items outside our program. The most common item is the AEPA exams. We recommend that you prepare for items outside of what our programs provide prior to or during the final semester of your program. That way, there is no delay in receiving your teacher/administrator certificate.

If you are applying for certification outside of Arizona, please reference our question for direction on how to plan your certification journey (below).

What if I am an out-of-state student wanting certification?

Keep in mind that completion of an ASU program may not meet licensure or certification requirements in another state. If you are planning to apply for certification in other states, either via reciprocity or directly through another state, please take time to review the ASU professional licensure webpage.

The ASU professional licensure page allows students to select their program and check under the determinations to find out where our program stands with the state(s) where you plan to apply for certification. If you cannot find the information you are looking for there be sure to visit the website for your state’s credentialing body for further information on teacher/administrator certification within your state. If you have further questions about certification in another state after reviewing the information provided there, please contact the ASU MLFTC Compliance office for further assistance at MLFTCcompliance@asu.edu.
