Academic Advising
Students are assigned to an advising team upon admission, with exception of doctoral students who are assigned an academic coordinator. All advising teams are composed of multiple academic advisors and a coordinator sr. Depending on the program needs, teams may also include other team members such as a coordinator, specialist, and/or desk assistant to serve other functions. The team works collaboratively, in what we refer to as an 'academic system' to provide timely, accurate, and student-centric service. We try our best to be accessible and offer several ways to connect with an advisor.
Ways to connect with us
Email
Email is useful for specific questions with more straightforward answers such as how to apply for graduation, where to find important dates, or how to contact financial aid. It is also useful for sharing documents or links. If the email message becomes lengthy or complex, requiring several messages back and forth, a phone call or appointment may better serve you.
Phone
Phone calls are useful for time sensitive issues such as late registration, or quick questions around more common topics such as resources, program pages, or registration issues. If a phone call becomes more complex or lengthy (>10 minutes), an advisor may suggest arranging an appointment to allow time to gather resources to support you.
Appointment
An appointment may be scheduled at a day/time during office hours that is convenient to you and are beneficial for situations or questions requiring more time to discuss and resolve. A few examples include considering a change in course sequence, taking a leave of absence or withdraw from a course, or if struggling academically. Appointments are generally 15 to 30 minutes in length, may be scheduled up to 2 weeks in advance, and are offered by phone or Zoom video.
Preparing for an advising appointment
We recognize that you are busy and want to be respectful of your time, so we offer these guidelines to make the best use of the appointment time.
Find a location with the least amount of distraction as possible. For your safety, we ask that you pull over if driving a vehicle.
Be prepared with a place to write down or type important information and/or resources shared during the session.
Have a computer available and log into your MyASU account.
Consider choosing Zoom when screen share would be useful, or you simply prefer the face-to-face interaction.
When booking an appointment through Calendly, please share not only the topic(s) you wish to discuss, but 'other details' that will allow us to prepare for the discussion and make best use of the time.
