Policy & Code of Conduct
There are a several academic policies that apply to ASU graduate students. It is the students responsibility to be familiar with these policies and understand how they may be affected. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact academic advising.
Policy Overview
The Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation (MLFC) expects that every graduate student to comply with the following policies:
Additionally, Graduate College expects students to be responsible for familiarizing themselves with all university and graduate policies and procedures. Be sure to review the Graduate College Policy Manual.
Program-specific Student Handbooks are located on your program page. Contact your advisor or advising team with questions.
Academic Integrity
At Arizona State University, we place great value on the research and scholarship of our students and faculty and are committed to a culture of academic integrity and scholarly ethics. We welcome you into our culture of academic excellence and integrity and hope you will help foster and promote ethical and honest behavior in connection with your scholarly work and interactions with your peers. The Office of the University Provost defines academic integrity, introduces the ASU Student Honor Code, student resources, related policies, and whom to contact with questions or concerns.
There are a wealth of resources for learning about academic integrity, including strategies for completing your work with integrity, avoiding plagiarism and self-plagiarism, and proper ways to cite sources:

We highly recommend viewing the Academic Integrity Tutorial on your MyASU priority task list prior to beginning your program even though it is not due until the end of the first semester.
Please take time to watch this video, created by the ASU Graduate Writing Center, to learn what academic integrity means, what constitutes plagiarism, and proper citation.
Grades
Reference the ASU Academic Calendar for signficant dates related to the posting of grades:
Grade Appeal Policy
The grade appeal policy process is for MLFC courses only. The Grade Appeal Policy document explains the procedures for the appeal of grades and results of graduate student culminating experiences. A student may appeal a grade only when they can document that one or a combination of the following has occurred:
The instructor erred in calculating points or acknowledging timely submission of assignments
The instructor did not apply grading standards equitably (that is, there is evidence of bias, for example, due to race, age, sex, religion, or national origin)
The instructor did not assign grades consistently with the standards and procedures for evaluation announced at the beginning of the course in the course syllabus. The instructor may amend or supplement the standards and procedures during the course by providing written or oral notice to the entire class.
To receive consideration, grade appeals must be submitted to the lead course instructor within 10 business days of the last date for posting final grades, as noted in the Academic Calendar.
Information is found on the Student Forms and Policies page of the Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation website (Student Life > Student Support).
Incomplete Grade Process
An incomplete grade of 'I' can only be given by the lead instructor when a student, who is doing otherwise acceptable work, is unable to complete a course due to illness or other conditions beyond the student’s control.
To request an 'I' grade students must:
Meet with the lead instructor (not the CI) to determine if they are eligible for an 'I' grade. We recommend doing this as early as possible and before the end of the session since this paperwork should be completed before final grades are due per the ASU Academic Calendar.
If the instructor agrees to an incomplete, request a link from the advising team/advisor to the 'Request for Grade of Incomplete' form and complete/submit it for formal approval by the lead instructor. A confirmation email will be sent once the form is signed by the instructor. Follow up with the instructor or advising team if you do not receive a confirmation email.
It is crucial to maintain communication with the lead instructor, as the primary responsibility for completing the work within the time frame specified on the form belongs to the student. Since the instructor does not receive notification from Canvas once a course ends, it is also important for the student to communicate by email and/or Slack once the work has been submitted.
Important considerations:
If a student requests an incomplete during their final semester with a due date after the anticipated graduation date on the Plan of Study (iPOS), they put themselves at risk of breaking continuous enrollment per Graduate College policy (see the Graduate College Policy Manual) and may need to enroll for at least 1 credit to maintain enrollment. An incomplete during one's final session could also delay graduation. Students are encouraged to meet with their advising team/advisor to discuss possible implications.
If a student is receiving federal financial aid, there could also be implications for receiving an Incomplete (I grade). Students are encouraged to connect with Financial Aid and Scholarship Services to discuss important policies and deadlines before requesting an Incomplete.
Satisfactory Academic Progress
Students must maintain satisfactory academic progress in order to remain in good academic standing and on track for graduation. The Mary Lou Fulton College of Teaching and Learning Innovation Satisfactory Academic Progress and Professional Conduct Policy defines 'satisfactory academic progress' and 'good standing' along with an explanation of the consequences of failing to maintain progress and good standing.
Some doctoral programs may have higher GPA requirements. Please connect with your advisor or advising team and/or view your program-specific page for this information.
