Welcome!
To help orient you to the program and give you the information needed to be prepared to successfully begin in the program, please watch the Academic Advising Orientation Video and complete all 6 steps of the New Student Checklist (below).
Alternative Pathway
ASU defines experiential learning as either the Alternative or Traditional pathway.
Alternative Pathway: For students who independently secure a full-time teaching position in a content area aligned with their certification goals. They must submit verification paperwork to the Professional Education Services (PES) office and report any job changes to PES and Academic Advising, as this may impact academic progress. Step 3 outlines how to initiate this process.
Traditional Pathway: For students without a full-time teaching position. The PES office places them in unpaid internships and student teaching to gain experience.
Questions on if your current employment could work for your experiential learning courses? Connect with PES (MLFTC-pes@asu.edu) and notify your advising team after speaking with them if anything needs to change for your scheduled courses.

Step 2: Obtain IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
The Arizona Department of Education requires ALL our students to secure an IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
Please know that securing this card is required:
For ALL our students, regardless of location.
You might need additional clearances besides the IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card. Check with your school to verify any other requirements.
To enroll in ALL experiential learning courses
If you do not have an IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card, please follow these instructions.
Once obtained, email a photocopy of the physical card (front and back) to your advising team (GradEdPrep@asu.edu) by December 15, 2025. Only after the IVP card is on file with us can we open enrollment for the experiential learning course.
Note: Submitting a photocopy of the IVP Fingerprint Clearance card after December 15, 2025, may delay your first experiential learning course to the next Fall/Spring semester. This impact may affect your graduation timeline.
Step 3: Register for Classes
Your advising team has created recommended course sequences based on your admission term and program. These sequences outline the ideal order of taking courses.
Visit your program’s page and select "Course Sequences":
Scroll to the relevant section (i.e. ASU Online) and select your Year and Semester.
Choose your course sequence based on your start term. Bookmark your course sequence for easy reference each semester.
Use the class line numbers to register.
Video Registration Instructions: Watch the "Registering for Classes" video above for a tutorial. Must be signed into your My ASU account to watch.
Written Registration Instructions: Using the course sequence obtained from Step 3 login to your My ASU page (my.asu.edu) > My Classes box > Registration > Add/Shopping Cart to enter in the 5 digit class registration numbers listed on your course sequence.
Arizona students: Submit a front and back copy of your Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card to enroll in your first Experiential Learning Opportunity. (See Step 2 for details.)
Experiential Learning course:
Enroll in your experiential learning course as soon as possible. Once you are enrolled in the class and you complete the Placement Request Form, the Professional Education Services department will begin your placement process. (See Step 4)
These courses are variable credit—students pursuing Arizona Teacher Certification should register for 2 credits, but requirements vary by state. Research your state's requirements. (See Step 6)
Step 4: Submit the University-wide Internship Application (UIA)
Submit a Placement Request form - Professional Education Services (PES) will provide a link to their form via your ASU email. For questions, contact MLFTC-PES@asu.edu.
Enroll in Apprentice Teaching (i.e. your experiential learning course)
Complete University-wide Internship Application (UIA) - this agreement is generated after you submit the placement request form and enroll in Apprentice Teaching.
Important Deadlines:
Spring Start:
September 18, 2025: Placement request forms are active for submission
December 15, 2025: Placement request form deadline to submit
January (First day of class): UIA signed and approved
Summer & Fall Start:
Mid-February: Placement request forms are active for submission
May/August (First day of class): UIA signed and approved
If you are in Arizona and are pursuing the Arizona Department of Education's Alternative Teaching Certificate you will need an Enrollment Verification Letter for your application. Detailed instructions for how to obtain this letter from ASU including how to apply for the Alternative Teacher Certificate can be found on the Arizona Alternative Teaching Certificate webpage.
Note: Your Enrollment Verification Letter is issued by our Certification and Compliance Team and is contingent upon being enrolled in at least one credit hour in the program. Registration is the first step to receiving an Enrollment Verification Letter.
Step 5: Paying for Classes
Once registered, go to the My ASU Finances tab to view and pay tuition. To manage financial aid, navigate to the "Financial Aid and Scholarships" section. Watch this 2-minute tutorial on checking your financial aid status.
If applying for financial aid, review the terms of acceptance. For questions, contact Financial Aid and Scholarship Services. Key payment deadlines are listed on the ASU Tuition and Billing Calendar. For tuition details, visit Student Business Services, which offers resources like the Tuition & Fees Schedules and Tuition Estimator.
For TEACH Grant inquiries, contact Financial Aid and Scholarship Services or access the TEACH Grant form.
For resources about paying for college, including loans, scholarships, grants and incentive programs, please see MLFTC Resources for Students.
The MLFTC Financial literacy team can be reached at mlftc-aid@asu.edu for questions about financial aid, scholarships, budgeting, or related topics.
View information about the ASU Payment Plan.
Step 6: Familiarize yourself with Certification Requirements
Students are responsible for researching certification requirements in their state. ASU’s teacher preparation programs are designed for Arizona certification, but ASU does not issue teaching credentials—the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) does. Visit ADE’s website for official certification requirements beyond program completion. To avoid delays, complete all Arizona certification requirements during your program.
Out-of-State Certification: Completion of an ASU program may not meet licensure requirements in other states. If seeking certification elsewhere, review the ASU Professional Licensure webpage, select your program, and check state-specific determinations. Always verify details with the credentialing body of your state.
For guidance, refer to the Arizona Teacher Certification Checklist below.
Regularly check your My ASU Priority Tasks for required actions, including financial aid items. Tasks may be informational or time-sensitive. Holds on your account can impact services, including registration. Some financial holds allow course registration but restrict loan disbursement, while others may require partial tuition payment before registering for future classes.
Want additional support navigating your My ASU page? Check out Your guide to My ASU and Understanding My ASU.
Registration:
It is the student’s responsibility to abide by and be familiar with the ASU Academic Calendar dates, deadlines, and policies stated there. Session C runs the full length of a semester (15 weeks) and the exact start and end dates are listed on the calendar. Not all courses are offered in every session, and what session courses are offered are subject to change each term.
Textbooks
Sign in to My ASU to obtain your required book list by selecting Books in the My Classes box and order textbooks through ASU Bookstores. Under the "My Classes" box, click the "Books" button to access the book list and use the "proceed to the ASU Bookstore" to purchase.
IMPORTANT: Some books are auto-delivered at a negotiated rate before classes begin. These are often digital materials with exclusive content. Confirm with your instructor before purchasing elsewhere. Charges for auto-delivered books appear after the drop/add deadline.
Accessing Classroom:
ASU uses Canvas as its digital learning platform, accessible via My ASU. Courses open 1-2 days before the start date. When available, course links will appear maroon and underlined. Click the course title to enter. Before classes begin, review the syllabus to understand expectations and assignments.
Resources for Navigating Canvas and Slack:
Canvas: Your courses will be housed on the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), so take time to view the Canvas Course Tour Video (7 min.) and Canvas Student Guide.
Slack: You can collaborate with classmates and faculty through the Slack collaboration hub. More details are found on the 'Slack 101' overview.
ASU Email:
Students must maintain a working ASU email address. Access it via the "Profile" tab in My ASU. You can forward ASU emails to a preferred email provider (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.). More information on ASU email addresses can be found here.
