Many of our students are interested in how they can obtain teacher certification upon graduating with their Educational Studies degree. Here are the pathways to certification that are available to students:
Option 1:
Connect with your state, or the state you are interested in becoming certified for, to find the alternative pathways and satisfy their requirements with your current bachelor's degree.
Most states will offer alternative pathways for students who have already obtained their bachelor's degree. This can look like taking a state test to satisfy requirements, taking an accelerated teacher preparation program at a local college or university, or applying for a provisional teacher certification with time to complete the remaining requirements. Every state is different, so it's important to review what is necessary within the state you are interested in obtaining teacher certification.
To review state requirements, students can visit our Professional Licensure and Certification page , select their interested program (i.e., Elementary, Secondary, etc.), and review approved states. They can then select their chosen state to be connected with the state's own department of education.
Students can also connect with our Compliance Team, which oversees program and state requirements, through email at mlfccompliance@asu.edu.
Option 2:
Enroll in a graduate certificate or master's program that offers Teacher Certification.
ASU currently offers master's programs with Teacher Certification in Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Special Education, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education, MEd.
Qualified students in Educational Studies, BAE, Educational Studies (Early Childhood Studies), BAE, and Applied Science (Early Childhood Studies), BAS, can consider an accelerated master's pathway. Students with a 3.0 GPA can consider pathways in Elementary Education, MEd, Secondary Education, MEd**, or Early Childhood Special Education, MEd with teacher certification.
**Educational Studies students only
Please connect with your advisors or the Professional Licensure and Certification page to ensure the program satisfies your state's requirements, as not all states have the same requirements.
