Students in the Educational Studies major will be required to complete a three-course sequence internship which includes the following courses: EDU 396, EDU 484, and EDU 498. These three classes must be taken in order and may not be completed in the same semester. Typically, the internship sequence is completed during a student's final three semesters. Students will begin the first course collaborating with faculty to create an internship working with an organization in their area. Students will then intern for two semesters implementing the skills they have learned by identifying a challenge within the organization and then implementing an education-based solution. Please note, the two final internship courses are only available during the fall and spring semesters and are only offered as Session C courses.
For the Instructional Design internship, students will create and present a project that demonstrates their knowledge of instructional design obtained in previous courses by applying it in a professional context. Students will search for an organization to work with, identify an instructional need, problem, or performance gap. They then will develop and deploy a solution that is delivered in an online or blended format. The internship courses must follow a specific course progression as required by our faculty. This course progression must be taken in the following order: LDT 301, LDT 320, LDT 330, LDT 410, LDT 484.
This program requires students to put coursework into practice through real-world learning opportunities. For certain upper-division courses, students will be required to find a placement to work or volunteer in a formal structured setting (i.e. daycare, preschool) with children from birth to age 5 for at least 15 hours per month. Children cannot have started kindergarten yet, however pre-K settings could be accepted. A placement team will work with enrolled students to process site approval, file paperwork, and answer additional questions regarding placement; however, students will be responsible for finding a placement in their area.
