The Educational Studies with a concentration in Early Childhood Studies BAE program helps to prepare students for careers working with and advocating for children specifically between the ages of birth to age 5 (not yet in kindergarten). Through this program, students can learn how to positively influence young children's lives and gain skills in communication, critical thinking, and leadership to affect school readiness for young children.
Students will gain an understanding of social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development and learn to set developmentally appropriate learning goals for the particular age group. They also will learn to create and support effective instructional strategies and develop highly individualized instruction.
This program does not lead to teacher certification. Students will need to connect with their state's department of education to review alternative pathways and requirements needed to obtain a teaching certificate. Upon undergraduate graduation, students in the Educational Studies (Early Childhood Studies) program also have the opportunity to apply to our online graduate programs for a direct path to teacher certification. Students who qualify may also be able to participate in an accelerated masters online program in Elementary Education. Students can also choose to obtain a graduate certificate for teacher certification after completing their undergraduate degree.
This program requires students to put coursework into practice through real-world learning opportunities. For certain upper-division courses, students will be required to find a placement to work or volunteer in a formal structured setting (i.e. daycare, preschool) with children from birth to age 5 for at least 15 hours per month. Children cannot have started kindergarten yet, however pre-K settings could be accepted. A placement team will work with enrolled students to process site approval, file paperwork, and answer additional questions regarding placement; however, students will be responsible for finding a placement in their area.
Transfer Students With Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degrees
Transfer students with an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in early childhood education or a closely related field should consider the Applied Science (Early Childhood Studies) BAS program. The BAS program focuses on remaining general studies and upper-division degree requirements. To review the Applied Science program click here.
