The Educational Studies program prepares students to work with children, youth and adults within a variety of settings. This general education degree leads to careers related to education and learning, with coursework focusing on developing skills to facilitate learning experiences with diverse populations in a variety of contexts. Students will learn skills including effective communication, collaboration, advocacy, innovation, self-awareness, and cultural competence for social justice. All of which are essential to future education professionals.
This program does not lead to teacher certification. Students will need to connect with their state's department of education to review alternative pathways and requirements needed to obtain a teaching certificate. Upon undergraduate graduation, students in the Educational Studies program also have the opportunity to apply to our online graduate programs for a direct path to teacher certification. Students who qualify may also be able to participate in an accelerated master's online program in Elementary or Secondary Education. Students can also choose to obtain a graduate certificate for teacher certification after completing their undergraduate degree.
This program is also available as a minor to non-education majors.
Internship
This program requires a three-course internship sequence usually taken during the final three semesters of a student's plan of study. The three courses are EDU 396, EDU 484, and EDU 498, which must be taken consecutively. Students will begin the first course collaborating with faculty to create an internship working with an organization in their area. Students will then intern for two semesters implementing the skills they have learned by identifying an education challenge within the organization and then implementing an education-based solution. Please note, the two final internship courses are only available during the fall and spring semesters.
