The Secondary Education program prepares students to educate learners in grades 6-12. Remote coursework with in-person internships and residences prepares students to obtain a master's degree in Secondary Education with or without Teacher Certification. This program builds on connections between educational design and decision-making and is designed to foster strong professional growth and leadership development.
Students can obtain teacher certification through either reciprocity from Arizona or by applying directly for teacher certification within their state. Students can visit the Professional Licensure and Certification website to review how ASU's academic programs satisfy state-specific requirements for certification. Students are still encouraged to reach out to their state's department of education to ensure every requirement is met when they apply for certification in their state.
Students will still need to apply to the graduate program after beginning the accelerated program. Acceptance to the graduate program requires a separate application. To review admission requirements, click here.
Secondary Education students will also need to select a content area upon entering the graduate program. The following content areas are available in select states:
Biological Science
Chemistry
Earth and Space Sciences
Economics
English
General Science
Geography
History
Mathematics
Physical Education
Physics
Political Science/American Government
Spanish / French / German / Chinese (Mandarin)
Business Education
Students can refer to the MLFTC Certification and Compliance page to learn more about Out-of-state certification or email our Certification Team at MLFCcertification@asu.edu with additional questions on teacher certification for a specific state.
**Teacher Certification in Secondary Education is not currently available for students in Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
Undergraduate students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master's program during their junior year (75+ credit hours earned). Applicants for the accelerated program must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 in the last 60 hours of their bachelor's degree. Students who do not meet this requirement will need to meet with our advising team to discuss the next steps.
Students not yet in their junior year are encouraged to express their interest in the program to advisors as early as possible in their academic journey. This will allow our advising team to consider your interest in future courses and semesters and allow you to connect with the graduate team at the appropriate time.
