  • Students must earn credit for physical education unless excused per RCW 28A.230.050

The Arlington High School’s Health and Physical Education Department has several goals for its students:

  • Encourage physical activity in order to maintain a reasonable level of fitness

  • Develop an understanding of gamesmanship and sportsmanship in a variety of games

  • Provide students with opportunities for active participation in team and individual activities

  • Encourage positive self-image and social development through cooperative interaction

  • All classes contain a conditioning component

  • Each class has a goal-setting component

  • Students are assessed and graded on Physical Education Standards

Health: 0.5 credit

Grade: 9

  • Learn about nutrition, mental health, drugs, alcohol, tobacco use, and human sexuality

  • Set personal fitness and health goals

  • Daily journal writing

Adaptive Physical Education: 0.5 credit - Low Level of intensity

Grades: 9 – 12

  • This program strives to provide a safe learning environment where students feel they can participate, grow and learn and can become healthy individuals.

  • Students with significant health issues

  • Grade will be based on Participation / Personal Improvement

  • Four units:

  • Foundations of Personal Health

  • Aerobics and Conditioning

  • Individual Sports

  • Team Sports


Walking/ Toning: 0.5 credit - Low Level of intensity

Grades: 9 - 12

  • Increase your physical fitness and cardio-respiratory endurance, strength and flexibility

  • The major emphasis will be walking for fitness

  • Learn how to self-assess your fitness level, and set fitness goals

  • Students are assessed and graded on standards that include walking for distance and speed

  • The class will be walking outside, rain, or shine, warm, or cold.

  • All weather clothing and an umbrella are requirement

Recreational PE: 0.5 credit - Medium Level of intensity

Grades: 9 - 12

    • A variety of lifelong sports, exercise, conditioning, and activities

    • Team and individual activities will be emphasized

    • Weekly conditioning

    • Students are assessed and graded on standards that include sportsmanship, gamesmanship, and physical fitness

Net Sports and Conditioning: 0.5 credit - Medium Level of intensity

Grades: 9 - 12

    • Tennis, Pickleball, Badminton, Volleyball

    • Weekly conditioning

    • Students are assessed and graded on standards that include sportsmanship, gamesmanship, and physical fitness

Speed, Power, and Agility Training: 0.5 credit - High Level of intensity

Grades: 9 - 12

  • Improve your speed, power, and agility through daily training in plyometrics, sprints, weight training, and other agility course work

  • Student athletes are encouraged to sign-up

  • All classes are conducted at 'practice tempo

Note: This class utilizes the weight room 2 days a week. Students are assessed and graded on Standards in speed and agility skills (40 yd dash, Pro I agility, Vertical jump, Standing Long Jump) and weight training lifts (Power Clean and Snatch)

Athletic Weight Training: 0.5 credit - Very High Level of intensity

Grades: 9 – 12 (Instructor permission)

Prerequisite classes: Speed, Power & Agility or Weight Training

Advanced level weight training class designed for athletes. Be prepared to work hard as this class is taught at practice tempo.

Weight Training: 0.5 credit - High Level of intensity

Grades: 9 - 12

    • For students dedicated to improving strength, speed, and power

    • Course will incorporate weights lifting, jump training, sprint training, medicine ball, and more

    • Students are assessed and graded on standards in speed and agility skills (40 yd dash, Pro I agility, Vertical jump, Standing long jump, and Seated medicine ball throw) and weight training lifts (Power Clean, Bench Press, and Front Squat)

Fit and Tone Weight Training: 0.5 credit - High Level of intensity

Grades: 9 - 12

Designed for all students wishing to improve their over-all strength, appearance, and body image through resistance and cardio-respiratory training.

Course Format

Each week we will cover the following components:

    • RESISTANCE TRAINING – where your muscles work against some form of resistance such as - weights, bands, or the weight of your own body

    • CARDIO TRAINING – you will work towards improving your aerobic capacity

      • Exploration of areas of flexibility, balance, and explosive power through other types of exercises

      • Students are assessed and graded on Weight Lifting Standards that include Bench Press. Front Squat and CrossFit along with a Step Aerobics assessment.

Career & Technical Health Course

Family Health: 0.5 credit
