WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BUSINESS STUDIES AT MACKIE ACADEMY?

In the Broad General Education (S1-S3), the Business Studies course aims to build on both the knowledge and skills learned in primary school through the study of significant Business concepts. Unlike S1, in S2 and S3, learners study discrete Business Studies. In S2 learners receive one period per week and this increases to two periods per week in S3.

THE BUSINESS STUDIES BGE CURRICULUM

In S2 Business learners will develop the skills and knowledge relating to a number of different Business areas which include Using Technology Safely, Global Events, Word Processing Skills, Business Challenges including The App and Easter; Young Money; Using Spreadsheets; Scottish Industry and Event Planning.

Within S3, learners are introduced to a wide range of business theory including: types of company and business structures; business and personal finance and planning; external factors and their impact on business; the importance of stakeholder groups and economic factors relating to business success and failure.  Students are encouraged to take part in business challenges where they work with peers using ICT to develop research skills and enterprising approaches to solve business problems.

LEARNING, TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT

Throughout both S2 and S3 a variety of teaching methodologies will be utilised. Learners will be responsible for working individually as well as in pairs or as part of a group on a range of different tasks.

Not only will learners develop a deeper understanding of various business concepts, they will also begin to encounter the skills associate with the study of Business Studies. Throughout both S2 and S3 pupils will develop the skills of decision making, problem solving, researching, presentation and interpersonal skills. Acquiring the understanding of these skills will give pupils a solid grounding should they continue with the study of Business Management into the Senior Phase.
