S2 pupils at Mackie Academy will receive four periods of learning a week in the Maths department.
As with our S1 Mathematics course, our S2 Mathematics course is broadly broken down into three "blocks" of learning, each followed by an assessment.
A list of the topics studied in each block can be found below. Essential topics (working with fractions and decimals, basic algebra skills, etc.) are regularly revisited throughout the year. Topics studied during S1 will also come up again, allowing pupils the opportunity to both consolidate their prior learning and develop their understanding of these topics further.
Please note that these are not necessarily the order that these topics will be taught in, and that different classes may be working on different topics at the same time.
standard form / scientific notation
negative numbers
algebra (simplifying expressions, expanding brackets, substitution, solving equations)
finance calculations
multiples & factors
algebra (all of the previous + factorising expressions)
statistics & probability
ratio & proportion
Pythagoras
speed, distance, and time

At the end of each block of work pupils will undertake an assessment to demonstrate how well they have coped with the material studied over the weeks leading up to the assessment. Most pupils will complete a Third Level assessment first.
Those pupils who have performed very well in this assessment and during lessons may be given the opportunity to complete a Fourth Level assessment to further demonstrate their understanding.
For pupils who have found it challenging to access the Third Level material, there is the opportunity to complete a First Level assessment or Second Level assessment instead.
Pupils will record the results of their assessment, as well as a personal evaluation of their own learning, in our Progress & Reflection Cards. Pupils will take these home to inform their parent/carer of their progress.
At the beginning of S2 the classes will be mixed together and "set" according to a number of factors. These include, but are not limited to:
attainment in S1 assessments
pupil's work ethic and behaviour during lessons
a pupil's homework record
their teacher's professional judgement
This is done to provide all pupils with the best chance of success with their Maths throughout their Broad General Education and when they eventually move into the Senior Phase in S4.
Please note that these settings are not permanent. The Maths department regularly gets together to discuss both whole class and individual pupil progress, meaning it is entirely possible for pupils to move classes during the year so that they can find the most appropriate level of pace and challenge to meet their needs.
Google Classroom
Pupils can access their maths class to find work posted by their teacher.
