Learners have the opportunity to develop a whole new set of practical skills and understanding that are most likely, not covered in primary school. HE is a fast paced subject, that tests learners ability to follow recipes and complete work in a timely and efficient manner.
In S1, learners have their academic year split in half. Learners spend half of their year completing a practical cooking block with Home Economics staff. During the other half of the year, learner's improve their knowledge and skills of food and how their choices impact their body and mind. To complete this, they create a snack for their 'Snackie Mackie' project then evaluate it. They also create adverts and nutrition labels for their snack.
In S2, all learners have Home Economics lessons in which they improve their knife skills and cover all types of food preperation.
In S3, learners who choose Home Economics continue their journey with learning how to follow and create recipes, cooking safely and improving their skills; such as knife skills.
Learners are encouraged to think about and learn the implications of healthy eating. The BGE curriculum in Home Economics is centered around developing the following core themes:
Practical skill
Safe working practices
Understanding sustainability, seasonality & cost
Understanding & knowledge of nutritional needs
Thinking of a career in the food, drink or hospitality sector... You are in the right place!
