Progress in BGE Science - Our Flight Path to National 5
We are keen to ensure all our learners in the Science faculty make good progress throughout the BGE. Our Flight Path shows expected progress during S1 and S2 in Science, and in Biology, Chemistry and Physics in S3.

Learning in S1 Science
In S1, learners will have three periods a week in Science to engage in eight units of learning over the year, covering third level experiences and outcomes.
Every learner will start the first unit together lasting two weeks, then rotate through subsequent units, each completed in four or five weeks.
Introduction to Science
Energy
Solids, Liquids and Gases
Microscopes and Cells
Acids and Alkalis
Inheritance
Electricity
Space
Learning in S2 Science
In S2, learners will still come to Science three times a week and will rotate through eight units of learning, continuing to cover third level experiences and outcomes.
Each unit is completed in approximately five weeks.
Body Systems
Forces
Biodiversity
Substances
Earth's Materials
Microbiology
Solutions
Waves and Vibrations
Learning in S3 Sciences
In S3, learners can personalise their curriculum and can take one, two or three Science courses.
Each course delivers learning in two periods per week. Learners will cover fourth level experiences and outcomes to further explore their chosen course in greater breadth and depth. The units covered in each course are as follows:
S3 Biology
Cell Biology
Multicellular Organisms
Life on Earth
S3 Chemistry
Rates of Reaction
Atomic Theory
Bonding
Fuels and Hydrocarbons
Metals
S3 Physics
Electricity and Energy
Waves and Vibrations
Dynamics and Space
Skills in BGE Science
Scientific skills developed at third level in Science are:
Planning, designing and conducting scientific investigations,
Analysing, evaluating and presenting scientific findings,
Applying scientific analytical thinking skills,
Showing understanding and awareness of the impact of science on society.
Scientific skills developed at fourth level in Science are:
Planning, designing and conducting scientific investigations and enquiries,
Analysing, interpreting and evaluating scientific findings,
Presenting scientific findings,
Applying scientific analytical thinking skills,
Independently demonstrating an understanding and awareness of the impact of science on society.
Assessment in BGE Science
In BGE Science, learners are assessed on their knowledge, problem solving and practical skills, developed in the following ways:
Mid-unit and/or End of unit tests
Practical experiment assesments
Presentation and/or Debate performances
Learners also have the opportunity to engage in self assessment of their scientific skills developed throughout third and fourth level. This process allows learners to identify their next steps in their learning.
