In 2024 the new NCEA level 1 standards will be fully implemented. Students will require 60 credits at each level plus the 20 Literacy and Numeracy credits to pass each level..
In 2024 the 10 literacy and 10 nueracy credits can be gained either through the co-requiste exams which are available twice a year online. Or by completing level one standards with the numeracy and literacy credits tagged to them.
Learners only need to pass the co-requiste literacy and numeracy tests once.
If you want to take a degree programme at University or at Polytechnic you must have University Entrance.
To be awarded UE you will need:
NCEA Level 3 AND
14 Level 3 credits in each of three approved subjects AND
UE literacy – 10 literacy credits from approved achievement standards at Level 2 or above, made up of:
5 credits in reading
5 credits in writing AND
UE numeracy – 10 Mathematics or Pangarau credits at Level 1 or above, made up of:
either achievement standards – specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects, or
or unit standards – a package of three numeracy standards (26623, 26626, 26627); all three are required
Different universities have adopted additional standards for entry, above the common UE standard, for admission to all or some of their programmes.
These are called Guaranteed Entry Scores (GES). The GES from NCEA is now set by each university - check these out on each university's website on the Universities Key Links page.
