For our sculpture project, the theme was grotesque and beautiful. We looked at examples of this theme like alebrijes, which are usually multiple animals combined with a unique art style. They come from Mexican culture, and are now one of the most famous types of Mexican folk art. We had choice over what we would make based on the theme, so I decided to make a decaying spine and ribs with flowers growing on it.
To start, Anne told me to make a mold to sculpt the clay on to. I used tape and crumpled paper to make a mold that is in the shape I wanted.Â
I rolled a slab of clay about 3/8 of an inch thick, and I layed it on top of my mold. I carved out the ribs and attached the spine segments. I added flowers by making small ovals of clay and attaching them with scoring and slipping. I removed some of the ribs for effect.
After the clay was fired, I glazed it. I glazed the ribs light gray, and the spine dark gray. I glazed the flowers yellow and red. I went for an exaggerated color scheme, with the flowers being the main focus.
I am happy with how it turned out, especially the flowers. I think I painted the spine too dark and the ribs too light, but otherwise I like it.
I have always been kind of grossed out at and amazed at the same time at how the body works. One of the most important organs in the body, the heart, is protected by the ribs. I decided to make a spine and back ribs with flowers on it to fit the theme. I made the colors on the spine and ribs shades of gray to make the colors on the flowers pop. I think it turned out good, and kind of cartoonish.
