Winter adventure was really fun. Here is the reflection that I wrote afterwards:
We pulled into the parking lot in the Asana Rock Climbing Gym for our first activity of adventure week. After some quick instructions we got into climbing shoes and got ready to climb. First, we tried some easy ones. After a few failed attempts I finally got all the way up and held on to the top rock for two seconds. Feeling more confident, I tried more advanced ones and got them after a few tries. By the end of the two hours I felt confident in my beginner rock climbing skills. After rock climbing we headed back to school for lunch and then set off for bowling. When we arrived, we got on our bowling shoes and started a game. Our team was Me, Owen, Edgar, Cooper, Henry and Lundynn. At the end of the game I came in 4th with 59 points, but I wasn’t upset. Both of these activities were a lot of trial and error, and taught me that when you fail you have to persevere.
The first activity of day two was boxing. Going into this activity, my expectations were not high. However, my excitement started to build as we saw the area we were going to be in. We started off by learning how to walk in boxing. Step with your leg opposite to your dominant hand and slide your back leg forward. We learned how to walk left and right and then backwards. Then we learned how to punch, and then tried it with gloves. One partner punched and the other held up pads. We did different combinations, and then swapped. After a while, we moved on to punching bags. At this point, everyone was exhausted but determined to finish strong. One partner braced the punching bag and the other punched for 30 seconds before swapping. At the end of boxing, I was exhausted but I had a lot of fun. We went back to school for lunch and then out to the escape room. We arrived after a slightly longer bus ride and went inside. The ground was covered with artificial grass, and plants hung from the ceiling. After a quick introduction, we were split up into groups and went into our rooms. Our room was a wizard themed room, where we were students studying under Merloch. The objective was to get a magic scroll that was in the room, not to escape. We found keys and opened locks, leading to new puzzles. New clues appeared on the screen, helping us progress. Just when we thought we wouldn’t find it in time, a new clue appeared leading us to victory. I stepped out of the room in awe, shocked at how amazing the experience was. These activities helped me learn the importance of collaboration. For boxing, we worked together to learn. For the escape room, we worked together to beat the room.
Day three was different from the other days. We were going skiing. We loaded into the bus with all of our gear and started the 45 minute drive up to Bogus Basin. When we arrived we dropped off our stuff and got on our ski shoes. We headed outside to get on our skis and had a quick instruction on how to turn around. Then we split up into groups. Me and Owen’s group headed out on the Nordic Highway. I learned how to ski and had a lot of fun. We headed inside for lunch and then back out to play in the snow. The snow was several feet deep and we had a blast playing around. Before we left, we had a quick reflection on how we helped each other. All of these activities shared one theme: teamwork. Without teamwork, these activities would not be easy.
