5th Grade Health with Ms. Rolfe

In 5th grade health we discuss many different topics like Wellness, confidence, self esteem, nutrition, and decision making. Wellness is an over arching topic that we always connect back to. For many of you this is your first health class. In fifth grade health students will get a lot of basic knowledge that will assist them during their time at the middle school.


6th Grade Health with Mrs. Mitchell

6th grade students are learning how wellness is related to their world by exploring the topics of stress, conflict resolution and growth and development. All topics are explored, as students gain a deeper understanding of how emotions and self esteem contribute to wellness. As part of the Stress Management Unit, students will learn a relaxation technique and deep breathing to reduce tension and stress. Conflict Resolution involves learning how to solve problems peacefully. The Growth and Development unit is about understanding the physical, mental and emotional and social aspects of puberty. Throughout all the units, the theme of wellness is the common thread that and how each topic impacts one's wellness.


7th Grade Health with Mrs. Mitchell

7th grade students are discussing the power of influences in their lives. Learning to see the influence of peers, parents and themselves helps the students understand they ultimately have the choice to be in charge of the decisions they make regarding wellness. The topics of tobacco, vaping, alcohol and drug prevention are being introduced and students are learning the dangers of drugs on their wellness. Positive decision making and respectful refusal skills are practiced in class through role playing and skits.



8th Grade Health with Mrs. Mitchell

8th grade students are exploring relationships, all different types but focusing the traits of healthy relationships within their lives. Students will learn about decision making and positive choices within relationships. Strategies to learn what is best for each individual by listening to the "clues" we feel when trying to make the right choice helps students become more confident in their own intuitions. WIth in the relationship unit, time will be spent on recognizing the warning signs of unhealthy relationships and resources available to help with teen dating violence. The sensitive topics of sexuality, pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections and abstinence are all addressed through the course. Respectful refusal skills are taught and practiced through small group discussion and role plays.


Health at AMS and Social and Emotional Learning

All 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders all take Health as part of the EAST program. The overall theme of Health class is the based on the philosophy of Wellness. Wellness is the overall balance of physical health, mental/emotional health and social health. Wellness is about learning to recognize each area of health is related to the other. Taking care of the body supports feeling good about yourself which in turn can help to build positive relationships. Each grade studies a variety of topics that impact one's wellness. Students are provided strategies and information to help promote a healthy lifestyle that includes making healthy choices for one's mind and body. Making smart healthy choices and practicing positive healthy behaviors will contribute to improving one's wellness over a lifetime. Infused throughout the Health curriculum are the five Social and Emotional Learning Core Competencies. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process of developing students knowledge , skills, attitudes, and behaviors that are needed to make successful choices. The five SEL competencies include: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision Making. These competencies are woven into classroom activities, discussion and projects as students begin take on the responsibility of their overall wellness.



PEER MEDIATION

Peer Mediation is a program to help students find peaceful ways to resole their conflicts with another student through the help of peer mediators.

All Peer Mediation Sessions are confidential and voluntary and set up by Mrs. Mitchell
