OVERVIEW: Grade 7 provides a variety of art experiences exploring new techniques and processes unique to art class at AMS. It is a high energy semester. Opening with illustration the program proceeds with block printing and closes with plaster relief mask making. The foundation was set for art success in Grade 5 and 6. We use what we know expressively in 2-D and 3-D design in Grade 7.

Georgia O'Keeffe

Inspirations and Adaptations

Of Pelvis with Distance

Grade 7 practiced working with Georgia O'Keeffe's pieces to get ready to create their own interpretations.

Faith Mainville's reproduction of Georgia O'Keeffe's East River No. 1

is a great example of this practice.

CURRIER CLUB FINALISTS

Edvard Munch, The Scream

In art class Grade 7 students adapted Edvard Munch's, The Scream to tickle their own senses. The questions, " What would make you feel the environment scream around you? " or "What would make you scream?" Munch described in his journal that he felt the shriek of nature. Enjoy the colorful, lively and EXPRESSIVE art pieces.

NOTAN

The Dark and Light Principle of Design

During the NoTan Unit each Grade 7 art student was required to create 3 art pieces using a specific design system. This system enabled them to create a balance of dark and light and mirror imagery. I enjoyed watching their spatial awareness, skill and craftsmanship increase with the completion of each piece.

Course Overview

Grade 7 will afford students the opportunity to explore a variety of drawing techniques for the first part of the year. Students will be encouraged to utilize specific drawing techniques as well as increase their ability to be expressive in their art making. We will truly experience the push and pull of creativity. Our art history focus will be the art movement, expressionism through Edvard Munch's, The Scream.

Hopefully, during the latter part of the semester we will be able to undertake the AMS traditional Grade 7 art projects: Plaster relief mask and linoleum cut block printing. These two projects take on a very hands on approach that requires specialized tools and materials. They have proven to be favorites of Grade 7 Art. Stay tuned!

AMS REMOTE LEARNING EXPECTATIONS

It is our goal to make remote learning as productive, rigorous, and engaging as possible.

General

  • Ask for help

  • Check AMS Gmail, Google Classroom, and Google Calendar daily

  • Respond to communication (email, call, message) within 24 hours

    • Use appropriate email etiquette

  • Students can expect that teachers will post their assignments/resources for the upcoming week by 5 pm each Friday.

  • Follow Google Meet Expectations

  • Communicate absences to your teachers and develop a plan to make up work

  • Make sure all work is your own unless otherwise specified by a teacher

SGRADING POLICY

Students will have many opportunities to demonstrate their learning. Their grades will be determined based on the following evaluation criteria:

Projects- 60% Students will be assigned 1-2 longer projects/quarter

Exercises- 30% Exercises will be completed on a weekly/biweekly basis and will supplement and enforce learning objectives for major projects.

Prep- 10%

Class Engagement - 20%

These are the activities that happen on a day-to-day basis in your classes, but may also include the work teachers assign to prepare you for class (ie. flipped instruction/homework). Class engagement tasks might include a “do-now” warm-up activity, participation in a discussion, a worksheet, a response to a video, etc. Teachers will identify which assignments are “class engagement.” Appropriate attendance is important during remote learning, too. Teachers will give students a bi-weekly grade from our engagement rubric that includes being present and participating appropriately. f a student's grade remains the same, it means engagement has remained the same.

Assignments will be given on a bi-weekly basis.

3 points - Present and exceeding expectations

2 points - Present and appropriate engagement

1 point - Present/no engagement or inappropriate engagement

0 points - Absent/no engagement

Retake/Makeup Policy

Learning is a process, and it is important for students to use feedback from their teachers to improve their mastery. Students may retake/resubmit any content assignment for partial credit . In order to be eligible, students must have received a 70% or below and schedule a meeting with their teacher within one week of receiving their assignment back. The student and teacher will mutually develop a plan for the retake/resubmission . Homework is expected to be completed by the given due date because of its value to daily lessons. There will be no homework makeups.

Feedback Policy

SchoolBrains will be updated every Wednesday. Teachers will reply to emails within 24 hours with the exception of the weekends and holidays.
