Program Overview

The overarching goal of our French program at AMS is for students to advance from the novice-low level of proficiency to the novice-mid or novice-high level. More information on ACTFL's proficiency guidelines can be found at this link. Below is an overview of the program structure from 6th to 8th grade.

6th Grade

Introduction to French

In 6th grade, we will begin our exploratory study of French. During this quarter-long course, you will learn to:

  • Greet someone and say goodbye

  • Exchange names

  • Ask and say how someone is

  • Ask and tell how old someone is

  • Talk about things in a classroom

  • Talk about the calendar

  • Ask about and tell how the weather is

You will also learn about different French-speaking places, such as:

  • Québec, Canada

  • New Orleans, Louisiana

7th Grade

Exploratory French 1A

In 7th grade, we will begin our formal study of French. During this semester-long course, you will build upon what you learned in 6th grade. You will learn to:

  • Introduce someone

  • Exchange email addresses

  • Ask about likes and dislikes

  • Agree and disagree

  • Ask how often you do an activity

  • Ask how well you do something and ask about preferences

You will also learn about different French-speaking places, such as:

  • Western Africa (Senegal, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Mali)

  • Le Maghreb (Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco)

8th Grade

Exploratory French 1B

In 8th grade, we will complete our formal study of French. During this semester-long course, you will build upon what you learned in 6th and 7th grade. You will learn to:

  • Ask about and describe people

  • Ask for and give opinions

  • Identify family members

  • Ask about someone's family

  • Ask about classes

  • Ask for and give an opinion

  • Ask others what they need and tell what you need

  • Inquire about and buy something

You will also learn about different French-speaking places, such as:

  • The different regions of France

  • The French Antilles (Guadeloupe and Martinique) + Haiti
