Wednesday, April 15, 2020

Hello My Wonderful Students,

I am sorry to say once again I haven't had time to get stuff done in the Kids Corner. I am working hard on your daily lessons and the time seems to just slip away. Before I know it, it is time for bed and I still haven't posted stuff on the Kids Corner. I hope you will forgive me once again. I will try really hard to get something on here tomorrow but if not I hope you will all be patient with me. I am hoping that once I get a whole week of Daily Lessons done that it will be easier and less time consuming next week. I apologize and I am so sorry because it is so important to me that we explore and learn about the things you want to. I will put a couple of quick things that I know some people wanted to know more about. If I don't post what you want to know about, I will! I love you all and miss you! I will get a list out today to parents for Google Meets on Thursday and Friday. I love you all and have a great day!

Things You Want To Learn

James said he wanted to learn more about the Rubik's Cube. I know he has been working on figuring it out. Lets see if we can find a way to help him. Here you go James, I found out the his

What is a Rubik's Cube?

Rubik's cube is a toy puzzle designed during the mid-1970s. It is a cube-shaped device made up of smaller cube pieces with six faces having differing colors. (Remember Cubes and Faces from our Math?) Rubik's Cube is a 3-D combination puzzle that was originally called the Magic Cube. Rubik's Cube is a puzzle cube, and the world's biggest selling toy of all time with over 300,000,000 (300 million) sold. It was invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. In a classic Rubik's Cube, each of the six faces is covered by nine stickers, each of one of six solid colours: white, red, blue, orange, green, and yellow. In currently sold models, white is opposite yellow, blue is opposite green, and orange is opposite red.

Important Dates in Rubik’s Cube History

1974

The cube is invented

After many different prototypes and versions of the cube being created, in 1974 Erno Rubik finally finished his final prototype 3×3 Rubik’s Cube. The cube was fairly large and made out of wood, with corners that were cut down due to the size of the object. It was here where Rubik realised he couldn’t actually solve what he had created, and spent a month figuring out how to do so.

1975

Patent obtained

In 1975 Rubik received a patent for his “Magic Cube” in Hungary.

The cube kept this name for the 5 years following, before being renamed after its inventor.

1977

Test batches released in Hungary

The cube was released for the first time in Budapest toy shops in late 1977. The version that was released meant the cube could not easily be pulled apart or broken, ideal qualities of children’s toys.

1979

Worldwide Distribution deal signed

It took several years before the cube was actually released worldwide, a total of 4 between patent receipt and release. This was due to “Iron Curtain” that separated Europe prior to the decline of communism at the time, and this made any worldwide distribution difficult.

1980

The World sees the cube

In early 1980, the Rubik’s Cube made its international debut in toy fairs across the world. It had to be changed slightly as the West had different regulations in regards to packaging and safety specifications. During this time, the name was changed to credit the inventor, and thus the Rubik’s Cube was officially born.

In the same year, David Singmaster published the first layer-by-layer method, a method which is still used by many puzzlers and beginner speedcubers even today.

1981

International Success

In 1980 and 1981, the Rubik’s Cube received the UK Toy of the Year award, and in the first 3 years of its release it sold 100 million units. The cube today has sold over 3 times that figure, making it the best-selling toy of all time.

Patrick Bossert also saw success in 1981, as his book entitled “You Can Do The Cube” which taught the reader how to solve their own cube sold 1.5 million copies.

1982

The speed picks up

In 1982, the first Rubik’s Cube World Championship was held in the capital of Hungary. 20 competitors, all selected from smaller competitions in their home countries, came together to solve the Rubik’s Cube as fast as possible. The victor was Minh Thai, an American teenager, who solved the cube in 22.95 seconds. He then later published a book entitled “The Winning Solution”, which also taught others how to solve the Rubik’s Cube. The Ortega Corners-First method that is still used by some today was based off of Thai’s book.

During the next two decades, as the World began to move on to different toys and inventions (especially with the daily technological advances that hooked the attention of the World), the Rubik’s Cube faded from the public view. It still remained on the shelves and still sold incredibly well, but the hype that originated back in its starting years had pretty much died off. The cube did make occasional appearances in the news, however, such as the Masterpiece Cube that was created in 1995 by Diamond Cutters Int. Valued at $1.5 million, it is the most expensive Rubik’s Cube in the World. However, as the Rubik’s Cube became less of a common sight in Christmas wish lists, speedcubing was born and began to thrive.

1997

The Fridrich Method

In 1997, Jessica Fridrich published her methods for solving the Rubik’s Cube online. The Fridrich method (also known as CFOP, an acronym for the stages of the puzzle) is regarded today as the best speedcubing method, and the world record single and average times have been held by Fridrich solvers for many years, despite Fridrich herself estimating that the method would not be efficient for consistent times under 13 seconds.

2003

The World Cube Association

In 2003, Ron Van Bruchem and Tyson Mao founded the World Cube Association. This was the first official organisation that would be responsible for the running of official speedcubing competitions and monitoring of national and international achievements. The WCA has helped grow speedcubing and has taken the hobby to many new countries. The WCA is today recognised as the official speedcubing association and any potential World Records must be set under WCA regulations and delegation before they are recognised.

In this year, the second World Championship took place. Dan Knight was the victor this time, winning with a time of 20.00 seconds.

2005

25 years of the Rubik’s Cube

The cube celebrated its 25th birthday in 2005. A special edition cube packaging was created to celebrate. Also during this year, the third World Championship took place. In this one, Jeans Pons won with a time of 15.10 seconds.

2014

40th year since the Rubik’s Cube’s invention

In 2014, the Rubik’s Cube celebrated 40 years since its invention back in 1974. An interactive Rubik’s Cube doodle was released on the front page of Google on the day, and the Beyond Rubik’s Cube Exhibition was opened at the Liberty Science Centre in New Jersey, the same venue as the 2014 US National Rubik’s Cube competition. The exhibition displayed everything cube related from robots that could solve the puzzle to original wooden prototypes from Rubik himself.

The World Championships and European Championships are still held every 2 years (each taking place on different years), along with the yearly US Nationals. These events still consistently bring together hundreds of speedcubers and, whilst many don’t stand much of a chance against the world’s best, friendships are formed and the events are always huge successes.

Records

The record for solving a Rubik's cube once is 4.74 seconds by Mats Valk of the Netherlands, at the Jawa Timur Open 2016 competition. The world record for the average time of five solves, in 6.45 seconds, was set by Feliks Zemdegs at the WLS Lato 2016 competition.

More Things You Want To Learn

Bostyn was wanting to know how you raise baby chicks and baby ducks. Here's some information for you Bostyn as well as some videos and a craft to do. Have fun.

Baby Chicks

RAISING CHICKS

Tending baby chicks isn’t difficult, nor need it be elaborate. As well as chick starter feed and clean water, they need a draft-free brooder pen with a red brooder lamp on at all times. This keeps the temperature at 92°F (33°C) at 2 inches above the floor. (It also reduces picking and cannibalism among chicks.)

When the chicks have feathered out, reduce the temperature by 5°F per week until they are 6 weeks old, then switch their feed from chick starter to grower mash.

TIPS FOR KEEPING A HAPPY CHICKEN COOP

  • If you don’t yet have one, here’s how to build your own chicken coop.

  • Many sources say that you can’t keep a flock of mixed ages. We never had a problem with older chickens picking on younger ones or vice versa. Our hens raised their chicks happily in the flock. Most picking is the result of overcrowding. Give your chickens lots of space.

  • Young chicks need to be close to water and food at all times. Spread a 4-inch layer of pine shavings on the floor, then lay several layers of newspaper over that. Scatter lots of chick feed on the paper and also have feeding troughs filled in the pen. Remove a layer of paper every day, and by the time the last layer is gone, the chicks will have found the feeding trough.

  • Always use red bulbs; injury doesn’t show under red light. Under white light, any bloody spot immediately attracts pecking. Chicks will cheerfully and efficiently peck each other to death.

  • Block corners of the pen with cardboard to make wider angles that are harder for chicks to pack up in. (You could also make a circular pen.) This prevents suffocation.

  • Ensure that waterers are shallow and cleaned daily to avoid having chicks drown. My hatchery recommends one gallon-size waterer for every hundred chicks. I always had two or three, even for fewer chicks, so that they wouldn’t crowd.

  • With pullets, I used one waterer for every six to eight chickens and a feed trough long enough to accommodate all of them at once.

Here is a video about chicks

Baby Ducks

What You’ll Need to Raise a Baby Duckling

  • Brooder – a spare bathtub, large Rubbermaid tote, dog crate or cardboard box lined with plastic

  • Heat Lamp

  • Thermometer

  • Chick feed — regular (chicken) chick starter feed is fine as long as it is unmedicated

  • Brewer’s yeast

  • Grit — commercial chick grit or a small dish of coarse dirt

  • Shallow bowl for water — such as a sturdy ramekin or soufflé dish

  • Shallow bowl for food — a small terracotta planter base works well

I have raised ducklings in a plastic tote, a kiddie pool and a galvanized tub. By far, the best place I have found to brood your ducklings is a spare bathtub, if you have one, with their water dish at the drain end.

Ducklings can’t help but play in their water, and the brooder will be soaking wet all the time no matter what you do. So the bathtub method seems to be the most effective in containing their mess. I line the bathtub with a few layers of newspaper to absorb the water, then lay rubber shelf liner over that so the ducklings won’t slip on the slick newspaper. After the ducklings come to recognize what is food and what isn’t, I add a layer of pine shavings which are replaced as necessary, along with the newspaper and shelf liner.

When you first bring your new ducklings home from the feed store or they arrive in the mail, dip each duckling’s bill into a shallow dish of room-temperature water (or sugar water – 1/3 cup sugar/per gallon water), then set each into your pre-heated brooder. The temperature needs to be 90 degrees for the first week, then lowered a degree a day (7 degrees/per week) until the temperature in the brooder is the same as the outside low temperature, at which time the ducklings can be transferred outside to a predator-proof house/pen. By the time the ducklings are 3-5 weeks old, weather-dependent, they can spend warm, sunny days outside, carefully supervised and protected from predators.

Until the ducks are fully feathered around 7-9 weeks old, they have trouble regulating their body temperature and need heat. Watch the ducklings (as well as the thermometer) to gauge if they are warm enough. Warm ducklings will scamper around the brooder. If they are too cold, they will cluster under the heat source. If they are too warm, they will pant and stand as far from the heat as they can get.

Ducklings hatched in an incubator, unlike those hatched under a mama duck, don’t have oil glands working yet to coat and waterproof their feathers, so they can easily become waterlogged and drown. For this reason, a shallow water bowl should be used for water, one into which they can submerge their entire bill to keep their mucous membranes moist, but not fall into and drown. Stones or marbles can be added to a slightly deeper dish as the ducklings get bigger. Until they are about a month old, ducklings should only be allowed short, supervised swims. I fill a plastic tub with warm water and let them splash around for a few minutes to get used to being in water. I then dry them off and return them to the brooder so they don’t catch a chill.

Here is a fairy tale about ducks, Bostyn. I hope you learned a lot about baby chicks and baby ducks! ;0)

What You Want To Learn

So I am trying to get caught up on the things you want to learn and I noticed that Ella wants to learn about Globes. But I'm not sure if she wants to learn about the Earth Globes or Snow Globes, so here is a little about each.

A globe is a picture of a planet drawn on a sphere. It is like a scale model of the planet. The word "globe" comes from the Latin word globus, meaning round mass or sphere.

Most globes are maps of the Earth. The most common types are political and physical. Political globes show countries. Physical globes show landscape like mountains and rivers.

The Invention of the Snow Globe

Snow globes were first introduced at the Paris Exposition fair in 1889. Water globes were introduced in a far smaller size than the modern version of the popular holiday item. The first snow globe featured powdery white flakes flowing around a scaled version of the Eiffel Tower. Snow globes became a fashionable item to own throughout Europe, and featured wedding bouquets, miniature dolls and military medals.

Here's a way to make your own homemade snow globe.

Ella also said she wanted to learn about Ninjas. So here is a couple of things I found out about Ninjas. Hope this is what you wanted to know Ella.

Q. When did ninja exist?

A.

Ninja were professional spies during the age of the samurai. Their origins go back to the twelfth century, when the samurai began to gain power. When the scale of fighting increased in the fourteenth century, it became necessary to conduct activities against enemy forces, and ninja became even more active.

Ninja were called upon by their lords to gather information, steal the enemy's food and weapon supplies, and lead the way in nighttime attacks. They received specialized training and were given special duties.

It was from the latter half of the eighteenth century that ninja became popular subjects of books and dramas. In the twentieth century ninja have been depicted in films using special effects and comics as imaginary characters with superhuman powers.

Recently ninja have become popular in the United States and other countries through comics and films, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Ninja are also popular as cartoon characters among Japanese children.

Ella here is a few ninja stories for you!

More of What You Want To Learn

Eve said she wanted to learn about Cheetahs and Lyla H. said she wanted to learn about animals. Since I don't know which animal she wants to learn about, I will have to ask her. A Cheetah is an animal so for now Lyla, I hope this will be okay for Eve and for you!

Cheetah Facts: Introduction

The cheetah is one of Africa’s most famous animals. Most people in the world are able to identify this elegant, long legged cat with its golden, spotted coat.

The Cat Family

The cheetah’s Latin name is Acinonyx jubatus. It is one of the larger members of the felidae (cat) family. However, as we’ll see further down the page, the cheetah isn’t usually included as one of the ‘big cats’.

The felidae family contains two subfamilies: Pantherinae, which comprises the tiger, lion, jaguar, leopard, snow leopard and clouded leopard; and Felinae, which includes all of the other cats, including the Cheetah.

Where Do Cheetahs Live?

Most of the world’s cheetahs live in Africa. A very small number of the rare Asiatic cheetah subspecies lives in Iran.

The cheetah is usually found in open areas such as semi-desert, prairie, grassland and savanna. However, they are also occasionally found in areas of dense vegetation and in mountainous regions.

Cheetah Size And Weight

The cheetah is build for speed rather than strength. Although taller than a leopard, it is not as heavy. The cheetah’s body is around 1.5m (5ft) in length. Its tail adds another 85 cm (33 in.). Its shoulder height is between 80 and 90 cm (30 and 36 inches).

The adult Cheetah weighs between 50 and 64kg (110 and 140 lb); males tend to be slightly larger than females.

Can Cheetahs Roar?

Cheetahs can purr, just like domestic cats, but they can’t roar like the other Big Cats.

Cheetah Fur And Markings

Cheetahs are the world’s fastest land animal. Keep reading to find out how fast they can run!

The cheetah has rather coarse, short fur. The coat is pale gold-brown in color, fading to white on the animal’s undersides. The cheetah’s back, sides and legs are covered with around 2,000 solid black spots.

The spots are round, and between 2 and 3 cm (0.8 – 1.2 in.) in diameter. The tail also has these spots, but towards the end they merge together to become rings.

At the very end of the tail is a bushy, white tuft. Cheetah cubs use this to keep track of their mother’s position when they are in long grass.

Tear Marks

Cheetahs have distinctive black “tear marks” running from the corner of their eyes down the sides of the nose to their mouth. Scientists think these may help to keep sunlight out of the cheetah’s eyes.

King Cheetah

Occasionally, cheetahs are born with a mutation that causes their spots to merge together, forming patches on their sides and three stripes along their backs and tails.

Cheetahs with this color variation are known as ‘king cheetahs’. They are extremely rare.

Is The Cheetah A Big Cat?

The term ‘big cat’ isn’t a scientific term. It is used informally to describe members of the Panthera genus that can roar.

The five animals belonging to the Panthera genus are the tiger, lion, jaguar, leopard, and snow leopard. Because the snow leopard cannot roar, it is often excluded from the big cats group.

However, the definition of a big cat is often widened to describe any big, potentially dangerous felid. (A ‘felid’ is a member of the felidae family.)

Using this wider definition, the cheetah is a big cat, as are the clouded leopard, snow leopard and cougar.

How Fast Is A Cheetah?

The cheetah is the fastest land animal on the planet. It can reach speeds of up to 75 mph (120 km/h) over distances of up to 1,600 ft (500 m).

The cheetah’s acceleration is equally as impressive. It can reach 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in only three seconds.

Watch the video below to see incredible footage of a cheetah running: it’s an amazing sight!

What Does A Cheetah Eat?

The cheetah uses its speed and acceleration, along with its remarkable agility, to catch its prey. A cheetah’s diet mainly comprises various species of antelope, wildebeest calves, hares, birds and wart-hogs.

Cheetah Adaptations

The cheetah has several adaptations to help it run fast. During a chase, its respiration rate increases from 60 to 150 breaths per minute. It has a large heart and lungs, and its large nostrils allow it to breathe extremely rapidly.

A cheetah’s claws cannot be fully retracted; this helps it to accelerate and to turn sharp corners at high speeds.

The cheetah’s long tail moves from side to side to provide balance as the animal makes fast turns.

Cheetah Families

A female cheetah with her cubs.

Cheetahs are typically solitary animals. Males will form small groups, which are often made up of brothers from the same litter. These groups are called ‘coalitions’.

Females live alone, and remain so even when they are raising cubs.

Cheetahs have a pregnant about 94 days. They usually give birth to 4 cubs, although there can be as many as 9. The cubs already have their spots when they are born, which is unusual for cats.

Cheetah cubs are also born with a short, upright mane which is gradually shed as the cub gets older.

Cheetah cubs stay with their mother until they are 13 – 20 months old. They then form sibling groups that remain together for another 6 months. After this, the female siblings leave the group. The young male brothers remain together for life.

Cheetahs live for up to 12 years in the wild, and up to 20 years in captivity.

Cheetah Facts: Predators

Cheetahs are fairly large animals, and don’t have many natural predators. However, cheetah cubs often fall prey to other big cats, and also to animals such as hyenas and African wild dogs.

Another problem cheetahs face is that their prey is often taken from them by other animals. Cheetahs will often give up their prey rather than risk injury fighting for it. If a cheetah cannot run due to an injury picked up in a fight, then it will die of starvation.

Are Cheetahs Endangered?

In the past, cheetahs have been hunted for their fur. Even today, some people tame them and keep them as pets or for recreational hunting other animals.

The cheetah’s conservation status is ‘vulnerable‘. It is thought there are only around 6,700 cheetahs living in the wild. A small population (around 80 adults) of the critically endangered Asiatic cheetah subspecies lives in Iran.

Top Ten Cheetah Facts For Kids

  1. When cheetahs are running at top speed, they travel over 20 feet (7 metres) with each stride

  2. Cheetahs are the smallest of the big cats.

  3. Cheetahs can see their prey up to 3 miles away

  4. Cubs weigh around 3.2kg (7lb) when they are born

  5. The cubs are born blind, but they can see after about 12 days

  6. The mane which the cubs are born with makes them look like honey badgers which may confuse predators

  7. Because of their low numbers, cheetahs are the most endangered Big Cat in Africa

  8. Cheetahs cannot fully retract their claws – few other cats are like this

  9. Lions and leopards usually do their hunting at night whereas cheetahs hunt for food during the day

  10. Only half of their chases, which last from 20 – 60 seconds, are successful.

Now lets give you all something to draw!

You are all amazing and I love you so much. Hopefully we get to see each other soon. I've got some great things planned for the end of the year! Remember on this Kids Corner, you can scroll down and do some of the activities again if you like them. Keep sending me ideas of what you would like to see and do. I hope to get caught up today, so I'm definitely going to need new stuff for tomorrow!!! Have a great day today. I hope you don't get tricked too many times today!

April Fools' Day

What does April Fools' Day celebrate?

April Fools' Day is a fun day to play practical jokes.

When is April Fools' Day celebrated?

April 1st

Who celebrates this day?

April Fools' Day is not a national holiday, but it is celebrated in the United States and many other countries. It is sometimes known as All Fools' Day. Anyone who wants to have fun can celebrate the day.

What do people do to celebrate?

The main thing people do is practical jokes. Sometimes even businesses or the media will get involved. Here are some of our favorite pranks:

  • One year Sports Illustrated wrote an entire article about this great new pitcher the New York Mets had found. His name was Sidd Finch and he could throw the ball 168 miles per hour! The Mets fans were so excited. Only problem was, the story was all a joke. Hidden in the title of the article were the words "Happy April Fools Day".

  • Taco Bell once announced that they had purchased the Liberty Bell and were renaming it the Taco Liberty Bell. People were really angry until they found out it was a joke.

  • In 1992 NPR (National Public Radio) announced that Richard Nixon was running for president again. They even had a comedian come on and impersonate the former president!

  • One year Burger King announced a "Left handed Whopper". They said they rotated some of the ingredients 180 degrees for left handed people. A lot of people came in the restaurant and ordered one!

  • Other fun pranks include flying penguins, UFOs landing, and even changing the value of Pi to 3.0 to make math easier.

WARNING: One thing to be absolutely sure about if you do an April Fools' Day prank is that you don't hurt anyone or damage property. Check with your parents or teacher first, if you're not sure.

History of April Fools' Day

April Fools' Day may have come from a few different events in history.

One theory suggests that the day comes from the change in the calendar in Europe from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. This moved the New Year from Spring (around April 1st) to January 1st. When people forgot and still celebrated the New Year in April, other people made fun of them.

People liked to play practical jokes all the way back to Ancient Roman times, especially during the Spring festivals. The celebration of All Fools' Day started in the Middle Ages. It was generally celebrated on March 25th throughout much of Europe up until the 1800s.

Fun Facts About April Fools' Day

  • The day is called Poisson d'Avril in France. This means April Fish. Kids tape a paper fish on their friends' backs and yell out "Poisson d'Avril" when their friends finally find it.

  • In England they use other words for fool such as "noddy" or "gobby".

  • The codename for one of the spies who helped to capture Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was named April Fool.

  • In Scotland they call the day "Hunting the Gowk".

  • In Portugal they celebrate by throwing flour in their friends' faces.

April Fools’ Day, also known as All Fools’ Day, is a day of the year when people in most parts of the world play practical jokes and tricks on each other.

APRIL FOOLS’ TRADITIONS

  • The earliest recorded association between April 1, pranks, and foolishness can be found in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales which was written in 1392.

  • Pranksters would secretly stick paper fish to people’s backs. The victims of this prank were called Poisson d’Avril, or April Fish, which, to this day, remains the French term for April Fools.

  • In Scotland, this day is traditionally called as Huntigowk Day. A sealed message that reads “Dinna laugh, dinna smile. Hunt the gowk another mile” would be sent. Upon reading it, the recipient will send it to another person for him/her to help the sender.

  • In the Nordic countries of Norway, Iceland, Finland, and Sweden, news media outlets publish one fake story on April 1.

  • In the United States, the pranks last all day, but in other countries they only take place until noon.

  • A Joker, a Court Jester, and a Jokester have become the images associated with April Fool’s Day.

  • Some people spend a lot of money and time planning elaborate jokes.

  • Spain, Hispanic America, and the Philippines celebrate the Day of the Holy Innocents on December 28, which is similar to April Fools’ Day.

  • In Belgium, some call it the Day of Innocent Children.

  • Countries in Western Europe, including Italy, France, and Belgium celebrate this day with April Fish. This tradition involves children drawing and cutting out a picture of a fish.

  • April Fools’ Day is not an official holiday. However, it is popularly celebrated in many countries such as France, Greece, India, Brazil, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Scotland, Sweden, United Kingdom, and United States.

Did you miss the Vocabulary Cards? lol I'm sure you have heard that we probably won't be back to school until after the 1st of May and I'm sure some of you are sad we won't be together until then. I'm sad too.....but we are going to do our best to make this time pass quickly. We will be doing stuff on our web site. I am learning all kind of new technology and I'm hoping we can make this feel kind of like we are still in school. Please let me know things you would like to learn about. I will try to put those things on this page and maybe put some of the sites and information under the Fun Things Section in Daily Schedule. There will still be work that I need you to do but you students are in charge of a lot of the things I put in this kids corner, so give me your ideas. What do YOU want to learn about? I love you all and wish you a happy Tuesday. May your day be filled with smiles!!!

What You Want To Learn

Joseph said he wants to learn more about Rocks and Fish. Thanks for letting me know Joe!!! Here is some information about Fish....

.....And Here Are Some Activities You Can Do That Have To Do With Rocks

(Make sure you ask your parents permission and get them to help you. I don't want anyone to get in trouble!)

Make a Rock Band.......ask your parents if you can have some different size containers with lids. These can even be something the are throwing away such as water bottles, cool whip containers, laundry detergent buckets., etc. Fill these containers with different types of rocks and different amounts of rocks. Shake the containers and see what different sounds your instrument makes. Get your brothers & sisters to help you play in a "Rock Band".

Build-able Rock Slime Supplies Needed

Instructions

  1. Make the slime: Pour 1/4 cup glue into a large mixing bowl. Add half of the starch and stir well with a spoon or craft stick. Gradually add the other half and mix well. Then knead the slime with your hands and return to the starch mixture for another mixing. This step is important because it makes sure there’s no unmixed glue hiding in the center of your slime ball.

  2. Check your slime consistency before adding the rocks: Slime too slimy? Rinse it with water and shake off excess. Slime too sticky? Mix it with some more starch.

  3. Prep the rocks: I found our rocks were kind of dusty and that made the slime not as pretty, so I recommend rinsing them first. Pour the rocks into a fine sieve colander and run under water. Dry them with a paper towel to remove the excess water. Next, check the rocks for any sharp pointy or broken rocks and remove them.

  4. Add the rocks: Stir the rocks into the slime, a cup at a time, until the slime looks like the pictures with very little visible slime between the rocks.

  5. Storage: Keep the slime in an air-tight container for up to one week.

Smart Tips

    1. Adult supervision required.

    2. Follow the recipe and do not substitute ingredients: A change in ingredients may cause an unwanted and dangerous chemical reaction.

    3. Use the right tools: Use tools like spoons or craft sticks when mixing the slime or cover your hands with disposable latex or latex-free gloves. Do not use your bare hands during the making phase.

    4. Wash your hands immediately after playing with the slime.

    5. Dispose of the slime appropriately. We recommend disposal within one week of making it or immediately after use if a sick individual plays with it or it is used within a multiple user setting like a daycare, school or play date.

FIZZING MOON ROCKS

Let’s get right to learning how to make these fizzing moon rocks for the upcoming lunar landing anniversary. Head to the kitchen, open the pantry and grab the simple supplies to whip up this fizzy mixture. Make sure to have plenty of baking soda and vinegar on hand because your kids will want to make tons of these cool “rocks”.

YOU WILL NEED:

  • Baking Soda

  • White Vinegar

  • Water

  • Black, blue, purple food coloring

  • Glitter

  • Pipette, meat baster, squeeze bottle

MOON ACTIVITY SET UP:

STEP 1: Add a few cups of baking soda to a bowl. This will be a recipe you play by ear depending on how many moon rocks you want to make!

STEP 2: In a separate container color the water as desired. We chose a dark spacey theme. Just remember once it mixes with the white baking soda, it won’t be as dark.

STEP 3: Slowly add the colored water to the baking soda a little bit at a time. Add a few shakes of glitter if desired.

TIP: You want to aim for a crumbly mixture that makes a “snowball” when packed together.

STEP 4: Shape the mixture into your moon rocks. They don’t have to be perfect and can be any size. You can wrap in saran wrap to help keep the shape in the freezer.

STEP 5: Let them harden in the freezer for a half hour or more.

STEP 6: Put the moon rocks in a baking dish and set out a bowl of white vinegar with a pipette, baster, or squirt bottle.

STEP 7: Make them fizz! Using your chosen tool for experimenting, have your kids squirt some vinegar onto a moon rock and observe what happens! Because the moon rocks were frozen, they should last a bit longer during the fizzing step for more fun!

FIZZY MOON ROCK TIPS FOR HOME OR CLASSROOM

This is a super simple mixture to whip up for any theme! Think snowballs for winter!

  • If your mixture is too wet or runny, add more baking soda.

  • If your mixture crumbles apart after you pack it together, add a tiny bit more water!

Make sure to do this activity with the moon rocks in a baking dish or tray as it can get messy!

Encourage kids to get their hands into this one! Feel the fizz, see the fizz, hear the fizz! Don’t like the smell of vinegar, use lemon juice instead!
