Reading/Word Work Time

Hello and Happy Thursday Everyone,

It was so good to see some of you on Google Meet yesterday and I can't wait to see some of you today. I miss you all. I hope you are having a good week and things are going well for you.

Mountain Language #16-20.

Finish this up and we will correct it tomorrow. You should have one of these papers in your packet or you can use the one from last week if you still have it. The Mountain Language Poster is in the top corner of the screen!

Roll and Spell

Since today it Thursday you know the drill. Its time for Roll and Spell. See if you parents have a piece of paper and a die. Grab your spelling list. Role the die and write your spelling word the way that the chart tells you. Go on to the next word and roll the die again. Make sure you write all of your spelling words. Here is your spelling list.

Tri-Fold

Now go on and do the last section on the front side of the tri-fold. You can use the vocabulary list on your spelling list to help you. Think about the vocabulary words you learned on Monday. What was the definition of each word. Match the definition with its word. You can use the vocabulary list on the bottom of your spelling list to help you if you need to.

Story and Comprehension

Get the story "Max and Eddie Watch Clouds" out of your packet and read the story. Answer the questions based on what you read. If you don't know the answer, go back and try reading the story again. Remember when answering questions about a story, it is a good idea to read it 3 times. The first time is a Cold Read. This is where you get to know what the story is about. The second time, you look at the questions and read through the story to find the answers. This is a Warm Read. The third time you read the story you are looking to find anything that you missed or didn't understand. This is a Hot Read. Notice that every time you read the story, it gets easier and easier. Reading a story three times is a good ides because you become more fluent at reading. That means your read it smoother and make less mistakes. You are familiar with the story and the words. You use more expression because you know how the characters feel or you can put the right emotion into what they are saying. Answer the question sheet and have your parents correct it with you and help you on the questions you missed. When you are done make sure you read or get on Lexia for 20-30 minutes. We need to reach our goal of everyone making it to level 13. I know you can do it. When you are done ask your parents if you can take a break before starting on the Math Block. Enjoy!

CHAPTER 11

Okay, today's Number of the Day would be #158. Only 20 more days of school!!! Until I get your Number of the Day Books sent home you can just practice on a piece of paper. Do #158. Show your parents how you do it. Don't forget to write include the following information.... (example is for #122) Remember you need to do it for #158.

Standard Form (Number Way) Picture Form Word Form Expanded Form

122 D II : One Hundred Twenty Two 100 + 20 + 2

(H) undreds/ (T) ens/ (O) nes Even or Odd 132 Ten More 222 One Hundred More

1 Hundred 2 Tens 2 Ones Even 112 Ten Less 22 One Hundred Less

Write 4 math problems that equal the number of the day...Examples: 11+11=22, 24-2=22, 55-33=22, 20+2=22

Don't forget to do your number of the day for #158

Here is a word problem that you can figure out as well....

You have 17 birthday gifts! 9 came from your family, the rest came from your friends. How many gifts did your friends give you?

Now get out your GO Math Book. Okay students, we are unable to do lesson 10.1 because you need to survey 10 students in the class in order to fill out your tally mark chart. If we had been able to do it you would have done different surveys and collected the data. In other words you would have walked around the classroom and asked 10 people what their favorite pet was out of cat, dog, fish, or bird. When each student answered you would have put a tally mark next to the one they said. For example, If you asked me and I picked birds as my favorite animal of those choices, you would put down a tally mark next to the word bird. Then you would have gone and asked someone else and put a tally mark down next to their choice. When you had asked 10 people you would have gone back to your seat and looked at the data or information you collected and then you would answer the questions on that math page. Such as, How many classmates chose dog as their favorite pet. You would look at the tally cart. Counted out many tally marks were next to the word dog and you would have written the number down on the line. You can look at this lesson on pages 469-472 but we won't be doing it. if you would like to practice doing tally charts you can do page 472 to see if you are using the information correctly. Today we will be doing Chapter 10.2 on pages 473-476. Please turn to page 473.

On page 473, you will look at the tally chart and decide how many more children chose sports than reading as their favorite hobby. Look at the chart and count up how many children chose sports and how many children chose reading. Now subtract the reading tally marks from the sports tally marks. What is your answer? Here is a video on Tally Mark Charts.

Now you know about Tally Charts. Today we are going to learn about Picture Graphs and before you go on with the math pages, let's watch two videos about picture graphs and hopefully it will help you.

I hope that helped you understand how Picture Graphs work. Now let's take a look at page 474.

On page 474 look at the Model and Draw. It is a picture graph and the title of it is Number of Soccer Games. ON the side you see the months March, April, May, and June. The key says Each soccer ball stands for one game. Now we could ask questions and have the picture graph help us answer them. One question could be "In what month did they play the most games?" If we looked at the graph we would see that June has the most soccer balls. Remember each soccer ball stands for one game so our answer would be June. Another question could be "How many games did they play in May?" If we counted the soccer balls we would see that there are six soccer balls. Since each soccer ball stands for one game we know that in May they played six games.

Now let's look at the next picture graph on page 474. The title is Favorite Snacks. Down the side we see the choices are pretzels, grapes, popcorn, and apples. The key says that each smilie face stands for one child. We are going to use this picture graph to answer problems #1 & #2. #1 asks "Which snack was chosen by the fewest children?" Remember fewest means the smallest or least amount of children. Now look at the graph and you can see that popcorn only has 3 smilie faces next to it. That is the fewest amount of children in this graph so your answer on #1 would be popcorn. #2 the question is "How many more children chose pretzels than apples? " Now we would look at the graph and see how many children chose pretzels.....That would be 8 children. Then we have to look at the apples and see how many smilie faces are next to it. There are 6 smilie faces so that means 6 children. Now we can subtract 6 from 8 or count up from 6 to 8 and we would see that there are 2 more children that picked the pretzels. That is what you would write on the line. Now you are going to do pages 475 & 476 on your own. Try your best. Ask your parents if you need help or don't understand it.

On page 475 use the picture graph to answer the questions #3-#6. On number 6 you are going to pretend that Christy's name is part of the graph. She has 7 pencils. Now write two sentences or questions that would use the information or data about Christy and her 7 pencils. Like on #3 it says "How many pencils do Alana and Brad have?" You would use the data on Alana and Brad to answer that question. What are some questions you could ask to use Christy's data?

On page 476, answer the problems. Do the best you can and ask for help if you need it. Use the picture graph to do #7 and the Hot Problem #8. For the hot problem you are going have to add up the data from different colors to find the 3 colors that equal 13 children. The title of this picture graph is Favorite Colors. The choices down the side are Green, Blue, Red, and Purple. The key says that each ballon stands for 1 child. You could count how many balloons are in green, blue, and red and see if this equals 13. Or you could do blue, red, and purple and se if this equals 13, or you could do some other combinations of the colors to find the answer. Write down what colors of balloons when added together would equal 13. Don't forget to do the test prep problem using the new picture graph.

Okay, we are almost done with Math. Ask you parents if they want you to do the pages in the Math homework book for extra practice. It would be page 225-226 in your practice book.

Answer the question #1-6 using the Picture Graph. Here is a little video that will help you on page 225, if you need help.

Answer the questions on this page for review. Even though we haven't done measurement yet try and answer problem #3.

Here is a Brain Pop Jr. video about Pictograph or picture graphs. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
